Quick Scroll List: Deanery letter experiences... 08.02.05 (2 years ago) #1

Anyone visited any of the deaneries for the deanery letter required for Permit Free Training ?
Please let us know your experiences. It would be very helpful.

I have heard that the London Deanery doesn't issue letters for Honorary posts and recommends short periods of PFT's for locums.
Someone seems to have got only 1 months PFT cause the dean recommended only for that much.

Also someone I know got a 2 yr PFT for a Foundation programme as the Dean from the Eastern Deanery recommended for that.

Now that the Home Office requires a letter from the Deanery even for a Fresh PFT... we all have another hurdle to face...
And I have heard that the Home Office issues a PFT for the period indicated on the Deans letter.

Earlier it was customary to have a 1 yr PFT even for a locum of a few days... now its no longer true... you may get PFT anywhere from a few days to two years.

It would be very kind if anyone who has visited the Deanery or the Home Office after the 19th of July to write down their experience.
Thank you.

The Eastern Deanery refuses to approve Honorary contracts educationallly and doesn't recommend then for permit free training.

So doctors getting honorary SHO posts in the Eastern deanery would not be getting the deanery letter ... without which PFT will not be issued by the home office.
Anyone in Eastern deanery with a similar problem.

Please let us know news from any other deanery in this regards.
Thank you.

The Eastern Deanery was kind enough to provide a Deanery letter recommending 1 yr of PFT for a locum SHO post.

Do write your experiences with the deaneries. They would be helpful for prospective candidates.

This was posted by postplab in another thread on this website

The information below has been taken from London deanery website.

New arrangements for applying for a Permit Free Training visa came into effect as from 19 th July 2005. A letter signed by the Postgraduate Dean recommending the PFT visa must accompany all applications for a Permit Free Training (PFT) visa. Previously, a letter from the Postgraduate Dean was required when applying for an extension of a PFT visa. All initial applications for PFT visas were made directly to the Home Office. Now, applications for both initial grants and extensions for PFT visas must be made to the appropriate Postgraduate Dean for recommendation.

Permit Free Training (PFT) visas will not currently be recommended for the following roles:

Ad hoc locums, to work as and when gaps appear
Locum SHO posts for less than 3 months
“Honorary” unpaid posts
Clinical attachments (for which there is a separate visa)
SpR LAS less than 3 months
Any other irregular non-training post.

Quick Scroll Deans approval mandatory for training on Work Permit 06.08.06 (1 year ago) #5

From Home office 05 June 2006

Please note that on 19 June 2006 a new application category for Postgraduate Doctors and Dentists will be available within Tier 2 of the Business and Commercial work permit arrangements. From this date all applications for doctors and dentists filling training posts within the NHS at Foundation Programme, Senior House Officer, GP Registrar or Specialist Registrar level must be made using this new form. Applications should be submitted by the appropriate Postgraduate Deans for a work permit to cover the entirety of the programme at that level.

A new application form (PD1) and guidance to be used for the new category will be available within the business and commercial notes on this website from 12 June 2006.
Applications for career grade posts should continue to be made on the WP1 form.

"So now on if anyone obtains a training post and needs a work permit... they would need the Deans approval and only the Deanery can make the application to the Home office... one more hurdle on the way of an overseas doctor seeking training in the UK"
