Entry to Examination
Candidates may enter for Part 1 at any time after gaining their primary medical qualification.
Candidates may resit Parts 1 and 2 repeatedly.
Recommendations and Advice
It is recommended that candidates do not enter Part 1 until they have commenced their Basic Surgical Training and completed their first year’s training. They are also strongly recommended to attempt Part 1 before Part 2.
(However, candidates should note that they will have 3½ years in which to complete all parts of the examination dating from their first attempt at Part 2.This regulation applies even if they choose to sit Part 2 before Part 1)

Nevertheless the MRCS
part 1 must be taken at the earliest... there's no harm. Esp if you have decided on a career in a Surgical Speciality.
But the MRCS
part 2... yes one must take it only after getting in a BST rotation...

Dear friends
I flunked in MRCS
part 1....
I don't know what i should write, but i really don't want others to repeat the mistakes i have done.I WAS a person who had never ever failed in life. "was" i say because now i have that accomplishment under my hat.
things always went smoothly for me.i always had the habit of studying at the last moment.ever since i was a child.i rmember i was a night worker ever since i can recall...happy go lucky person.i rememeber frustrating the studious guys always, back in my medical school beacuse 1 week before the examinations,i was an illiterate person in the subject.i asked them to mark the importants in my books, sat behind them in the exams and got the grades at par with them,if not better...
Things had always come to me.I never had to fight hard for it.Planets maybe, people say are responsible...even i remember for PLAB
in read for exactly 17 days.my seniors had told me to give at least 3 months of prep for it....
MY FIRST MISTAKE WAS THAT I TOOK MRCS
TOO LIGHTLY....
I didn't even read one third of raftery.Didn't bother to get the right books.MRCS
revesion notes i got on 5th sept (exam was on 12th ).that too my friends couriered me urging me to go through them at least 1ce.i completed the notes by 10th, but didn't revise them at all.I didn't solve the MCQs.not even the core and system modules...
The paper of MRCS
was very basic and however hard i try, i can never say that it was difficult.there were things during the exam that i knew i had read, but long time back...i just couldn't say if they were true or false....i didn't read raftery, so i can't say about it, but whatever little i could do with that sort of prep was because of my basic knowledge of LOVE AND BAILY.When my friends asked me how was the exam, the first thing i tld them was that love and bailey is a gr8 book....thats what i remember...
MY SECOND MISTAKE WAS THAT I DIDN'T DO THE RIGHT THINGS AT THE RIGHT TIME.
Being a JR in surgery in Asia's largest hospital according to patient turnover (safdarjung hospital,New delhi)had a different fun.and doing duties for 40 hrs 50 hrs continiously was always very enjoyable. In safdarjung in surgery and O+G, it is said that if u are lucky to have time to shit,u won't have enough time to wipe your ass.i remember falling asleep at red lights after returning from on call duties....I felt like being the king of the world when i first inserted my chest drain.i remember those dirty I&Ds,those ugly debridements, those challanges we had for breaking the record of 2 cut downs in 4 minutes 6 seconds....i remember sending the security guard to bring ciggerates from whereever he can.i remember making sure that all the dressings are shining before the consultant begins his round....
.....but i don't remember myself studying....I forgot that all this fun could wait for the right time.i totally ignored my priorities.i forgot that at that time, life required me to study and study hard...I forgot that i was in safdarjung hospital for a reason.the reason of taking post graduate experience on paper....and i paid for forgetting this....
MY NEXT MISTAKE WAS THAT I DIDN'T LISTEN TO MY SENIORS....
They always asked me to study.they always told me that no1 is all time lucky.they always told me that membership exams are not too easy.but i was too overconfident of myself.Anyway, life has its own amusing way of teaching things to us.
But no regrets. In some way, i think whatever happened, happened for good.I didn't deserve to pass the exam.in the past even though i have not been a "glued to books" types, but my understanding of the subject had been adequate after the exams.but this didn't happen after this exam.i was feeling a strange emptiness after coming from the exam hall.I need to be thorough with the subject now.
what i cant decide is that when shall i take the exam now.i plan to move on to UK in january and take PLAB
part2 in feb, and target for August jobs.next MRCS
date is in jaunary 16th.shall i take it in india or UK? or shall i take it at all or not???
I know some of u guys will advice me to look for some other branch except surgery.but i am really aware of the problems i would be facing in Uk for surgery.don't worry friends, i will always keep my options open for other branches because i know " beggers are not choosers. " But even if I get Noble prize of medicine some day, i'll being a surgeon....
but please dont hesitate to give me any advice.they are always welcomed.
At the end i will request future MRCS
aspirants not to repeat the mistakes i have done, and take membership exams very seriously.
May God bless us all...

Thanks for your extensive advice on prep for MRCS
. From my personal experience, I can say that MRCS
is not a easy exam but it also not at all very difficult if u study methodically. U have to study the right book in right manner.
1)RAFTERY is THE BOOK for MRCS
(at least for part1). Read it at least twice.
2) Practise MCQs as much as possible. The only thing that can make u through is PRACTICE, PRACTICE and PRACTICE.
Best of luck.

its only the primary medical degree needed for the part one
for the part 2 and 3 you need to have a two year basic surgical training
