The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will be pressing for the status of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS ) for KEM Hospital during the visit of the Central Health Minister, Dr A Ramadoss.

According to health officials, the civic administration will try to make the best of his visit to KEM hospital today.

Additional Municipal Commissioner (Health) Shrikant Singh confirmed this and said the corporation will first try to obtain the status of National Institute of Excellence (NIE). “Our aim is first to get the NIE status and subsequently get the AIIMS status,” he said.

Besides KEM, the state government’s St George hospital is also vying for the same position.

Singh said that KEM and the people of Mumbai would benefit immensely if the hospital gets the NIE status.

“We would get more than Rs 50 crore per annum from the Centre and the hospital would get state-of-the-art equipment for diagnosis and treatment. Simply put, infrastructure would improve and ultimately benefit the citizens,” he said.

Declining to divulge the BMC’s wish list, Singh said it would be revealed only after the hospital receives the status.

Surprisingly State Health Minister Digvijay Khanvilkar was not aware of the pitch. Khanvilkar said, “I am not aware of this, I haven’t received any such proposal.”

k.e.m hospital is definitely worthy of the AIIMS status.as a ex-student and currntly an intern in the institute i am always in awe when i see the kind of treatment offered and also the efforts taken by the authorities to try and acquire the latest technology for the hospital.
