Quick Scroll uk trained doctor wishing to go to Oz 08.21.05 (3 years ago) #1

hi i am a doctor of indian origin, and would have 14months of SHO experience in England, by February 2006. I have just had a telephonic interview with a hospital in Queensland in Australia , who want to employ me as an SHO in the Emergency Department for a year. I have been told that I have to give the AMC exam during my year there

I wish to ask advice on the following

1. Should I take the plunge given the worsening job situation in England?
2. Since the post is recognised for training by the ACEM should I dream of someday becoming a registrar?

Or have I just been given a rosy picture by the Medical Superintendant?

Would appreicate help on this!

Quick Scroll Area of Need, the UK perspective 08.22.05 (3 years ago) #2

A friend of mine is in the UK, having completed his MBBS, internship and two years of surgical posts at a Govt Medical College. He subsequently completed the Basic Surgical skills course in Bombay, came over to the UK completed his PLAB and worked for six months in the A&E Dept. He subsequently approached a registered agency to work as a doctor in the area of need category in the Emergency Dept and he was told to work another six months in the UK as the minimu eligibility criteria for selection was one years work experience in a developed country! So much for Indian work experience. Some agencies are better off in that they say If your Primary Medical Degree is from Australia , New Zealand , UK, Ireland , Western Europe, North America or South Africa, or you have undertaken at least 6 months paid work in one of these countries/regions then it is likely you are eligble

Others are more blunt in saying to Register you need to have minimum 1 yr's experience in one of these countries: Australia , New Zealand , UK, Canada , USA, South Africa, Germany, The Netherlands and Ireland in full employment as a medical practitioner that is not an observership or clinical attachment. Mind you this is from an agency that is registered to recruit International Doctors. Currently there are an estimated 123 PRHOs (interns) who have not secured jobs in the UK, and these are local graduates

So I guess this answers questions about people who asked about filling vacancies in the area of need category, fresh off their internship from India. I am sure there will be exceptions to every rule

Regarding salaries, the starting salary for SHO level is 54842 which is roughly under 5000 a month before taxes. But living expenses in Oz are considerably less than the UK so hopefully at the end of the month savings should be more in Oz!

Hope this helps
