Quick Scroll Library: Specialities we can get in Australia 08.30.05 (3 years ago) #4

i think we have talked lots of how to go to Australia . we seem to have refined it to a good extent. thanks to all those contributions.

its time one gets to know of available oppurtunties there. both for freshers and specialists. this is important because after all the homework one does and goes to Australia he/she should not be disappointted at not getting the choice of speciality

can we keep this thread alive and more importantly to the point????

to start of

1 : GP
2 : Psychiatry

start adding and may be even give statistics for each.

Quick Scroll Depends on a lot of factors 08.30.05 (3 years ago) #5

Well the latest I've found is that Emergency Medicine, GP and Psychiatry tops the list of specialities offered to IMG's. Actually there's no hard and fast rule and it all depends on a lot of factors.

Fresh graduates : After the AMC route and PR formalities one is not left with much of specialities to choose from. As the famous equation that's well known to most ''AMC 1 + AMC 2 + 1 yr (Supervised training) + 2 yrs (Generalised training)'', at the end of this whole process the fresh graduate has already spent 5 years after graduation and so doesn't aspire for anything higher and prefers to continue his GP. In case of those who never give up territory is one of the most important deciding factor. There are places that remain vacant even in lucrative specialities such as Paed in the Northern Territory. But the fact remains as to who would want to go there.
Mostly its GP but there are other specialities too and all that one has to do is , 'make his/her CV stronger + keep looking out for the posts as they are advertised'.

Specialists : Since they are already getting an exemption from the relevant Royal college, its just a matter of working in a rural setup for 5 years and then going up the ladder as for 'Fresh Graduates'. But for 5 years they are bound by the contract to serve in rural areas and so they are static as regards their further specialisation is concerned for this period.

In either situation its a lot of investment of time in terms of years. But then thats a sort of price you pay for it. Already this medical profession seems like a never ending story and the Australian path is only making it longer.

The fact is, if you have sheer determination and can take calculated risks then sky is the limit icon_exclaim.gif I have some statistics and will post it soon.

Regards,

Dr. A

Quick Scroll and others? 08.30.05 (3 years ago) #6

Ok what happens to people who are neither fresh graduates nor specialists.

Say if work as an SHO/ PHO in the area of need program and simltaneously do my AMC what heppens when i pass the AMC

Am i eligible to enter the training program as nicely described by Dr_A ''AMC 1 + AMC 2 + 1 yr (Supervised training) + 2 yrs (Generalised training)'' and if so at what level. According to the medical superintendant I will be receiving supervised training, at the SHO/ reg level. So once I pass the AMC do I have to work as an intern again or will my AON stin be counted as supervised training?

Or because I have chosen the AON scheme am I not eligible to enter the training scheme post AMC and will have to do the GP pathway

Yes I am lost, see if you can help me out!

Quick Scroll i look at it in a different way 08.30.05 (3 years ago) #7

i would ask someone
"what are u going to Australia for? financial gain? higher education? research? just wanna get out of india?"

the point is u decide why u wanna go.

if its financial gain, does it really matter if u are in a rural area or being a gp?
if its higher education, give it everything, try ur luck and die for it. its not easy, just like in any other country.
wanna get out of india? do whatever u get abroad. be it gp in a rural area.
u want everything- higher education in sought after branches, stay in an urban area, earn lot of money-- well its not that easy. cribbin over it in forums wont fetch u anything. remember u are going out of ur territory and its going to be difficult.

i want this thread to be useful for people who are plan to go there in specific fields. i dont want them to feel bad after they r half way through the process.
so guys, pls write down which speciaities ur friends have taken up, ur relatives have gotten into etc etc, official stats if possible.

Hi Plabotomy, I've read that if you already worked as a doctor in Australia , after completion of both AMC exams, you may apply for exemption. But they recommend that while applying for exemption for the supervised training, you should also apply for supervised training too, just in case you are not exempted. If you do get exempted, then you can withdraw your application for the supervised training position.
Also, after AMC, one can work anywhere, and not just in the AON. But as they say, competition is tough, and you have to be tougher! icon_wink.gif Hope this helps!!

Quick Scroll thank you ella 08.31.05 (3 years ago) #10

Hi Ella thank you so much for your reply

For the first time some on is actually making sense

I was a bit confused because I read somewhere that after two years of the AON I would be eligible for the GP fellowship, sorry I dont know the full form and then Universities wouldnt look at my case favourably as I had worked in AON and now I wanted to move out. In other words they would prefer to keep me in the AON

From what you say I should stand a fair chance of for supervised posts and at the same time, I could apply for exemption of my supervised training period. Do you know Ella how long a period could be exempted ie of 1 year internship plus two subesequent years is there a maximum tme period (out of three years) that I can apply for exemption or am i exempt only the internship

Finally i read somewhere else that those who are on AON have a time limit of two years to clear their AMC or forver doomed to be a GP

Thanks
Plabotomy
