hi joe

you do not get a PFT letter from the deanery for visa extension of your CA (took me a while to figure out what CA was)

For extension you should take your appointment letter and head to your home office

I know that the application fees costs £350 by post and £500 in person, but Id recommend going to the Home Office at Croydon because by past experience they seem to be the kinndest people, although they say that there shouldnt be a difference between home offices.

Also keep all your paper work upto date and take a sponsorship letter showing that your expenses will be taken care of (unless you've managed to get a bank account in which case you need a certain mimimum balance)

In the past they used to renew visit visas on the basis of CA for a minimum of 6 months, but now there are rumors that your visa would be renewed only for the period stated in your appointment letter

Hope this helps

CA = Clinical Attachment (for those who are still wondering)

It is not a rumour. Home office has been giving visas only for the period of appointment even if it is finishing in a week. We know some people who renewed their visas thrice in a month (and thereby spending £1500) in process.

It depends from case to case

a lot also depends on your luck

In August 2005 there was a girl who got a one week locum

the dean was on annual leave and she applied for a deanery letter

the deputy dean who was probably did not keep himself abreast of the trends gave her a letter for a year

and hey presto she has pft till august 2006!!!

but i guess not everyone would be so lucky

That makes the situation for plabbers even worse as previously you could renew your visit visa twice making it total of 18 months on a visit visa

and now you can renew it only once and that too for a maimum of six months
