Experts look for ways to plug ‘brain drain’ in medical field

Quote:
The paper pointed out that in the mid-’70s, 68 percent of Filipino doctors were working outside the Philippines. What is new today is that doctors are studying to become nurses so they could work abroad.

Tan said about 3,500 medical doctors have left the country as nurses since 2000. In 2004 and 2005, 2,347 medical doctors took the nursing board exams. And the estimated number of doctors currently studying nursing was 4,000.

one of my uncles went to the US in the mid-70s as a doctor and he is still practicing in California.some of my classmates in medical school had even brothers and sisters practicing medicine in the states in the 90s up to the present.thing is,the US is a big country and offers opportunities only big countries can give.Philippine doctors take up nursing to gain US immigrant visas and after a while complete exams to practice medicine there.after all they do use american authored books in there.ask president clinton of his opinion because he had a philippine doctor during his presidency.

yeah, and to add up to jose_pedal's note:

the philippines isnt that rich to provide better paying opportunities for its doctors. lets face it... doctors are only humans. they also seek better opportunities for personal growth. if ever there is a fault in the system, i think it has got to be within the academe. some medical schools dont address the idea of sustainability and the retentioin of some of their graduates.

greetings from the ateneo de zamboanga university school of medicine! icon_smile.gif

well it does kinda difficult to manage time studying med and teaching at the same time. i presume you graduated with honors in the premed course.did you finish bs nursing?i heard some of my classmates earning 50k per month for part time.

i really cannot discourage you from working.my brother studied law while working as senior budget officer ng regional office ng dbm, finished 2nd in his class, 1 in their pre-bar and got 83% in the bar.

so nasasa-iyo talaga.alam mo kung ano ang kaya mo. good luck.
