The order of nerve, artery and vein is usually either NAV or VAN. The sources (or draining vessel for veins) of these three structures i.e. spinal cord, aorta, and inferior vena cava are related in this order only(from posterior to anterior). Anatomy is basically a very planned architecture, it does not allow intermingling without any order. The relations change when all the three twist like in medial rotation of leg or lateral rotation of arm. In intercostal space the relation is VAN. The nerve supply comes always form the area of origin and is therefore most disciplined, followed my artery, then vein and lymphatics the last being being least orderly.

For the nerve supply to the limbs it is often difficult to remember ventral rami and dorsal rami. First of all, the spinal nerve comes out and after white rami and grey rami communications with sympathetic ganglion divides into anterior (ventral) and posterior (dorsal) rami. Here there is a simple rule that the limb plexus is formed by only anterior (ventral) rami and never posterior (dorsal) rami [posterior rami supplies only back]. The ventral rami again divides into anterior (ventral) and posterior (dorsal)rami. Now if any animal is visualised, extension is making back muscles contracted and flexion is ventral muscle contraction. So the ventral rami always supplies flexors and dorsal rami supplies extensors. Since fetus stays in flexed posture, the flexion is stronger than extension. Now after this discussion let us take up an example of sciatic nerve. It has two components - tibial and peroneal. Tibial supplies flexors of ankle and hence root value is ventral branch of ventral rami of L3 L4 L5 S1 S2 and S3 (no S3 in peroneal because flexion is stronger). The peroneal component supplies the extensors and hence dorsal branch of ventral rami of L3 L4 L5 S1 and S2. Try this for adductor nerve and femoral nerve too. Same holds for upper limb as well.
