How will downgrading from a Dual-Xeon server to a single core P4 Server improve performance..?

Well, you seem to have missed another detail. This new server is dedicated to RxPG Online. The dual xeon was server was serving all the 25+ sites in RxPG Network. Now the rest of the 24 sites will stay on the xeon while RxPG online will get its own new p4 server.

Thanks for giving a suggestion.

We thought about that already. Currently we are doing an expert code and database audit to increase the intrinsic performance of the site. After that it will move on to its own P4 server. Our next step will be to move RxPG database on a dual Opteron with 4GB memory while keeping the P4 as the webrendering server (which it does better). According to our tech experts that will be an efficient config. Clustering will come afterwards.

But this is a long term plan and will be implemented step wise over the next two years. Please let us know if you have any suggestions on the contrary.

Regards

Well, today was the first day for RxPG site with a brand new Dual Processor Opteron Server in the background and we are sure everyone have noticed the considerable improvement in RxPG website's speed. In the peak hours today the site was serving 300+ pages per minute (that is five pages per second!) which is a considerable improvement considering the fact that the site used to stall with a load of 150+ pages per minute in past.

The RAM has also been upgraded to 4 GB with an additional 4 GB in reserve (will be applied over a period of time).

[8 GB of RAM for our servers! - we are not putting a limit for any of the resources for your beloved site.]

As promised earlier, the hard disks of our servers have been changed with SCSI disks running parallel in an array (RAID 0). These are THE BEST performing hard disks available in market as of now.

With all this the technical part of the speed upgradation is over. Now the job is passed over to the programmers who willr eview all the code in RxPG website and weed out the unneccessary parts to make the site run even faster!

The site has taken the load remarkably well today. If any one is still unhappy with website's speed, please let us know.

Not exactly. "Raid 0 breaks data is into chunks (stripes) and stores them on multiple hard drives. Improved performance is obtained from reading and writing to the hard drives in the array in parallel. Data is read and written simultaneously from blocks on each hard drive. Multiple applications can read and write to multiple drives at the same time instead waiting for other applications to finish using a single drive. There is no redundancy in the data; therefore, the full capacity of the hard drives are used." Raid 1 is used for mirroring and thus protecting the data. Ref:

Anyways, we have daily backups configured to another server. So wont loose much in case of a crash. Then we have monthly secondary back up DVDs at our place!
