Quick Scroll Ophthalmology - Difference btw Photophobia and Blepharospasm 11.12.05 (3 years ago) #1

I am doing my third year right now. In my Ophthalmology internals, one of my Professors asked me this question : "What is the difference between Photophobia and Blepharospasm?"

I answered "Photophobia is involuntary contraction of orbicularis oculi muscle and hence closure of the lids when light is shone into the eye. Blepharospasm is involuntary contraction of orbicularis oculi even when the patient is in the dark."

But the Professor was not happy with the answer. Anybody has any other explanation ? Please help.

Looks like there are no takers for this! Anyway, I'll stick to my answer and defend it the way it is!

dr4jc is right.

Photophobis is a symptom, it is a complaint of patient that he/she can not tolerate the light. It is also there in meningitis..

Blepharospasm is involuntary contraction of eyelids.

Parson says blepharospasm is not abolished in light, but by cocainization, as it is a reflex involving 5th nerve..
