Quick Scroll Debate: USMLE - is it worth it? 11.16.05 (2 years ago) #1

fellow rxpgeans, hello to all of u..
what i want to ask all those ppl who are really into USMLE is that is it really worth writing USMLE ...and if at all u make it, do u know the hectic life ahead...? all those hours of sloggin... and i heard that u have to feed the tax dept really well to keep u safe...n what abt the malpractice insurance n all..? what do u think of it as a whole..? or is it a "black hole"..?

Do you drive a car?... Travel in a bus or train?... Visit public places?... etc etc ... Did you know that you could have an accident? ... Did you know that you can get an infection?
All the questions you have asked are not new to any RxPGean nor are they limited only to the US.

In my view
USMLE is the best exam a medical gradaute can take at his level.... this is as far as the exam is concerned. I am a great fan of this exam.

Every one knows about the Visa problems... and the risk of actually never making it to a residency in the US. But you have to take your chances...

As about hectic hours, slogging, taxations, malpractice... more or less that's the same in every single country. And let me remind you... it's all this that you are getting paid for.

Munish said it well.

You have to do a lot of research on this before you jump into it, especially the Visa problems...Best of luck..

according to me, its worth undertaking this exam, but i would like know if there is anyone preparing for part one in Mumbai, if yes then i would be great to have a friend rather than doing everything by oneself.
also is there any way i can find an online friend(on this site or any other)
would be greatly obliged if you could please tell me
thanks

just compare it with our exam!

-no reservations at all
-8 hrs rotation (max 48 hrs a week)
-$38,000-45,000 pa stipend (more than income of average american citizen)
-flexibilty in changing speciality
-job profiles very good ($120,000 start) even better than Microsoft engg working for 5 years
-tax is almost 40% but "everyone" has to pay it, no looholes so no discrepancies between diff classes
-options of hundreds of fellowship programs later
-most importantly "standardised"curriculum so quality of education is equal at all centres (only high quality research at bigger cnetres thats all the diff)
- less red tapism and fakeness in research, and you get the credit if you are first aouthor and not not your hod then prof then asso prof then lecturere then senior resi and lastly "you"
-all hospitals "well equiped" so no need to generate results, pts insured so no unethical issue
-malpractise suits makes you to deposit more premium to the insurance company which pays to the petitioner and tis not that you are jailed or you pay $1 million to be given as compensation.

i hope its good to take not only for conviniece and money ut for the sake of excellence in medicine and high quality research/contributin to the field....
