Hi Kuniak,
This is Dr Reddy here. You should realize that PG from certain countries like India are not given any credit in Canada
. You will probably have to repeat your residency here in Canada
if you wish to practice as an anaesthesiologist. Specialty residencies are very difficult to obtain in Canada
let alone Family medicine. You should carefully think about these options before rolling the dice to come to Canada
. Truth is bitter................we are all facing the reality which is all we know. Canada
is a dreamland for doctors. We all come here thinking we can easily practice medicine but only later everyone realizes that we all have to start from stratch.
Hope this is helpful.
Dr Venugopal Reddy MD

Thanks Dr Venugopal
I am now working at kuwait as an anaesthesiologist with handsome salary. I have already applied for immigration to Canada
. From kuwait not only me many doctors are heading for Canada
. Nobodies know the reality for getting job. I have heard one or two stories of doctors getting job there without appearing in qualifying exam. How far it is true I don't know. Are u at Canada
? Are u working there? I have heard that it is easy to get job for anaesthesiologist. Can u give me details regarding Anaesthesia
practice. After LMCC will we able to practice Anaesthesia
or not?
thanks

Hi Kuniak,
I have expressed my honest opinion. I am sure other people in this forum would agree with me. There is no such thing as getting into a job for doctors right away in Canada
. You will have to go through the hoops. I think you have not researched enough.
You have decided to make a bold move in your life that will change your future enitrely. You seem to be earning handsome salary in Kuwait. You may not even earn 1/10th of it in Canada
while you are here struggling to enter a residency. I am really sorry to say this.
I have not heard anywhere how you can practice without taking the exams in Canada
unless you have your PG from UK, Australia
, NZ, South Africa etc.
Even after getting your LMCC, you can only frame it on your wall. Nobody will give you a job. You will have to redo your residency training in Anaesthesiologist for 5 years if you want to be one.
I am trying to advice you because the road in Canada
to medical doctors is a dead end. Once you enter it, you will not be able to come out of it.
Good Luck to you.
Dr Reddy

Hello Dr.Reddy and Kunaik,
I agree with Dr.Reddy.
One cannot practice in Canada
if the degree (MBBS, MD, MS etc) is from India.
If you have done your PG in the countries that Dr.Reddy has mentioned, you can start work in Canada
in the same field but you still have to appear and pass the MCC exams. There is no escaping LMCC.
I live in Canada
, in rural Saskatchewan. Most of the specialists there are from South Africa. They all wrote the LMCCs.
Dr. Reddy is in Canada
and is going thro' a lot of trouble himself. He knows better.
It does sound discouraging but the absolute truth always is bitter.

Thanks for reply,
What do u suggest for me? From the previous messages I found it is difficult to get residency there? Should I leave the idea for Canada
or Is there any hope for indian doctors to get any thing like fellow/job or research post to survive? I mean after passing all the exams. I have applied for May-2006 MCCEE.

Dr Kuniak,
I can give you some suggestions. There is no roadmap to get into residency or back into practice in Canada
. This is unfortunate. Most of the residency programs in Canada
will ask/require you to have/demonstrated canadian experience. But the question is how to get canadian experience? You can either do observerships or try to get into a research programme (MSc or PhD) or fellowships. But they are not easy either. So this is where the problem lies. You will clear all the exams in no time. But that does not mean anything. I know many doctors here who have got their LMCC but they are without any clinical experience for nearly 3-5 years. After 2-3 years, you lose your eligibility to sit for most of the OSCE
exams in Canada
.
You will have to know somebody in the clinical side to get a foot in the door. You will have to choose your provonce where you are going to immigrate because most of the provincial IMG programs require you to be a resident of that province for atleast 1 year. So chances are that you are looking at about a year where you will spend taking the exams.
My suggestion for you would be to try to get a foot in the door into some clinical or research position while you are studying for the exams. This will keep you mentally/physically/financially fit.
I would not discourage you from coming to Canada
. Canada
is a great place to live. Unfortunately it is not a easy life for IMGs in Canada
at the present. Lot of IMGs come to Canada
without knowing the reality. Ultimately, every IMG becomes a victim to canadian bereaucracy!
Good Luck to you.
Dr V Reddy MD
