FAQ: How are IMGs able to survive in Canada
?

Hi All,
I was thinking how all the imgs in Canada
are surviving for living. Is everybody pretty much sitting at home and counting their lucky stars or are most of them employed somewhere? If so what kind of employment?
I am thinking of taking up a security job at the Mall. I was doing a part time job before of delivering Calgary Sun newspapers to houses. They dont really pay you much. I have no other option. Nobody gives me any job. People are often laughing at me when they hear that I am a doctor applying for blue collar jobs. That is a pity.
If anybody could give me some kind of suggestion what to do for living that would be nice.
Thank You

Hello!
It is very tough for us to have job and prepare for exam or residency. Back in 1985, I worked at Burn Unit in U of A hospital as Aid and looked for intern. It is impossible to get in. After 5 years , I gave up my struggle. My female friend who was lucky to get support from husband keep pursuing. She finally got it but in US. Now, every time I think about this career, I feel so sad to be in Canada
.
Now , I am old, but still hope to have a chance to do it again.

Yes, life is not a bed of roses. It is tough to get a really decent job in Canada
. And it is pitiful that after all these yrs of work experience, when we land here as PR in the skilled worker category, having submitted all the certificates, we are just a Tom, Dick and Harry.
Again pursuing for your career and working at the same time is not so simple. This is more so with the kind of exam one has to take. I am at a loss to understand.

One thing i can suggest you and other people is that if it is possible for you move to the provinces where it is easy to get in....For example if you move to manitoba you will have many more chances to get started in medicine. It is really true, many GPs and even consultants are IMGs there.
I will again stress that look into opportunities in other provinces where things are easier.... like Manitoba, Saskatoon, NewBurnswick... Dont trust anybody visit websites of College of Physicians and Surgeons of these provinces and plan accordingly.... Once you are in system you can always comeback to place of your choice....
All the best...
