AMA defends use of overseas-trained doctors

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) says patients should not be worried about being treated by overseas trained doctors who have not sat the basic Australian Medical Council exam.

Queensland's Health Minister has confirmed overseas doctors working temporarily in Australia do not have to sit the test.

AMA Queensland president David Molloy says the tiered public hospital system means there is always a more senior doctor to help physicians during their first year.

"If they don't know something there's always somebody above them supervising their work that they can refer to," he said.

"The whole concept of the public health system is that you have tiered care and at the end of the chain there's an Australian registered specialist supervising the work of the junior doctors."

A spokeswoman for Health Minister Gordon Nuttall says overseas trained doctors must have qualifications from a recognised university to practice in Queensland.
