Quick Scroll request to all us medicine residents 11.26.05 (3 years ago) #1

Hi all ,
I am an indian medical graduate and would like to pursue a career in internal medicine in the US . Here is what i know :
1 apply and clear step 1 step2 - ck and cs go for match , hope for interview , get selected and join then its balle balle Amritsar to LA ( provided i get the visa.
so with this much knowledge and an approximate idea that a 95 plus percentile is reqd in step1 and 2. Could any one please guide me as to whatthe current scenario is for indian med grads. and what are the chances of landing a good int med residency.
which are the universities suitable for ppl like us.
which is a relatively safe place and which are the ones to be avoided.
Consdering the facts that its a costly affair what are the prospects of a middle class background person to get through to this eventual dream of internal medicine residency in some good us university hospital.
Please do answer questions like:
What is a good score?
what should be the timing shedule of taking the steps.
how bad is the visa situation
what visa is neede for cs
what visa is needed for residency
is step3 and added advantage before the match?
Please take time out and help me here as i am really in two minds about the whole thing.
Thanks in advance
apoorv

shardul,

what are the advantages or disadvantages of a large /medium /small sized program?

how does salary for a psychiatrist compare to say internal med/peds after completion of residency? i found quotes for residents in these specialties but not for post-residency.

would appreciate your inputs. thanks!

hey shardul,

thanks for the perspective.

i think the work atmosphere (inclusive of scut work/on call) as well as the quality of the program in terms of academics/ research are important.

long term perspective would be pass rate at boards, opportunities for fellowship and future career

yes there are enough variables here and the question of program size would depend on individual expectations.

thanks again!

dsha

Quick Scroll queries about residency 02.24.06 (2 years ago) #9

Hi Shardul, Thanks for your wonderful article. I just wanted to know another thing, is getting a residency in neurology more difficult than getting into IM? What are the chances of FMGs getting into a residency in Neurology?
thanks.
Monica

Thank Shardul for this information, i did check out the link you gave out, bit i just wanted to confirm. I have an active interest in Neurology. Since i have a bit of anxiety disorder, surgery and other invasive clinical therapy is out of my reach, and frankly i prefer it that way. BTW, just for information to others, My neurology teacher confided today that she herself suffered from Anxiety Disorder for 7 years. But right now she is the best in the dept. of Neurology.
