Quick Scroll Experience in MCQ 1 April 05.04.04 (4 years ago) #1

Hello, I took the MCQ 1 in April 2004 and I hope these information would be helpful for future candidates.

There were 90 questions. Most of them have 5 stems. 7 questions had 4 stems and about 6 questions had 6 or 7 stems. I counted a total of 451 stems.

There is enough time to answer all the questions because you don't have to ponder whether to leave blank since there is no negative marking.

The topics that are featured prominently are Anatomy , Physiology and Pathology . A few questions are on Microbiology and pharmocology. But most questions concentrate on neoplasia and trauma.

Some questions I remembered:
icon_arrow.gif neonatal Physiology
icon_arrow.gif Physiology changes in pyloric stenosis
icon_arrow.gif acetylcholine
icon_arrow.gif subclavian steal syndrome
icon_arrow.gif glioma
icon_arrow.gif pleomorphic adenoma
icon_arrow.gif pharyngeal pouch
icon_arrow.gif nephrotoxic drugs
icon_arrow.gif superior mediastinal Anatomy
icon_arrow.gif appendix
icon_arrow.gif risk factors for oesophageal carcinoma,
icon_arrow.gif adverse prognosis in breast carcinoma
icon_arrow.gif adverse prognosis in lymphoma
icon_arrow.gif healing of fractures (more of Pathology of bone healing)
icon_arrow.gif metabolic and hormonal changes in major trauma
icon_arrow.gif Staphylococcus epidermidis
icon_arrow.gif organisms in sputum
icon_arrow.gif compression of common peroneal nerve
icon_arrow.gif absorption in colon
icon_arrow.gif bright red stool in a child

These are the books that I used
icon_arrow.gif Anatomy : 1. Grant 2. Netter's Atlas
icon_arrow.gif Physiology : Ganong
icon_arrow.gif Pathology : Chandrasoma's Conscise Pathology
icon_arrow.gif Pharmacology : Katzung

My advice is to do a lot of MCQ's while studying and to understand why some answers are true and false rather than just memorizing the stems hoping the same stems would come out. Some questions require thinking but none of them are there to deceive you. Reproduce some Anatomy drawings will help you to memorize the pathway of important nerves and arteries: phrenic nerve, vagus nerve, femoral artery, first rib and etc

There is very few questions on perioperative management. No questions on diathermy or preoperative investigations or post operative complication.

Another thing that I realized while doing MCQ's is that for questions with more than 5 stems, I had a tendency to only transfer the answers for the first 5 stems and 'forget' to mark the answers for stem 6 and 7. So I would advice you to print out some answer sheets and practise transferring answers and see if you transfer all the T's and F's correctly and completely.

I hope the above information is useful. I am crossing my fingers hoping that I will pass.
