Mach effect
the visual perception of edge enhancement seen at boundaries between abrupt changes in luminance. Presumably due to inhibitory neural connections in the retina, a radiograph of a step wedge will be perceived with accentuation of the brightness differences at the step borders, as if real, visual boundary lines existed between the steps. The grey scale of the image is also compressed .....

Mach effect:
describes an artefactual linear lucency which may be seen along the edge of a superimposed radiodensity, for example when one bone is projected on another. It is important not to misinterpret this for a fracture or other Pathology .
