good enough for what in Psychiatry
?it would be a definite advantage as it is a PG degree, but would be lesser placed than an MD, (though on paper it is the same).
Also not many institutes offer DNB
in psych. i think mangalore and bombay have a few colleges.
Father muller in manglore comes to my mind.
post if you want any specifics

Well India is still alitte bit backward where it come to Psychiatric awareness. Though the Taboo associated with it has defiitely decreased it is still existent.
As for job prospects they are unending if you diversify yourself. U can work in Govt. Mental Hospitals, have your own consulting, get on the medical board of a MNC & do a spl consulting for their top brass. Also you can be a visiting doc in Special education schools, corporate hospitals & deaddiction centres.

Thanks rueeta for clearing things up a little. Could u tell us what is usually the patient section that psychiatrists deal with in India ? Is it mainly the mentally ratarded ones and lunatics?
Any difference working in smaller centres and metros ? What are the prospects for indian psychiatrists abroad , lets say in U.S and Australia
?

Oh well in my hospital which is a Private Trust one i've seen majority of patients with schizophrenia, all types of Depression, post-partum psychosis, conversion reaction, possession syndromes, Dhat syndrome, insomnias, dementia, Drug addictions & Scholastic problems.
Mental Retardation usually goes to Paeds unless there is a specific Psy indication.
I have seen only one case of Mania, a trichotillomania, an ASPD, an OCD.
No Multiple personality, eating disorders or fancy drug addicts though.
