advice on vts application

Hi all, a few things to note when applying to a VTS scheme, or if you are about to have an interview.
Many VTS schemes now use an MCQ exam to help in shortlisting, The level of the questions is about the smae as PLAB
1, and it covers general medicine, surgery, ENT
, Ophthalmology
etc.
Many deaneries also use a long application with essay style questions to shortlist. It is important that your presentation, grammar, spelling etc. are all impeccable as this creates a good impresssion.
Only apply to 1 deanery, or 2 at most. Applying to every Deanery does not improve your chances, it is a big hassle, and you hae to declare your preference. As the Deaneries get so many applications now, they only tend to consider those that have placed them 1 or 2. Your preferences are checked centrally on a database, and if you apply to five deaneries stating to each that they are your first choice, they will throw your application out of all five - a complete waste of your time and money.
There are more articles, advice and tips, including practice MCQs, and sample answers to common essay questions at
please let me know if this is helpful
FYI, I am a GP Registrar on the Neath Port Talbot VTS scheme, I went through the whole application process (including essay questions, MCQ exam etc.) last year, and got my first choice of VTS. If anyone has any specific questions, let me know.

Hi there,
Some deaneries still do have an interview. Many have an assessment day instead (I am not talking about the MCQ exam here). Wales is one of the deaneries with an assesment day, and it consists of:
- a group role playing exercise
- a simulated consultation with a trained actor being the patient
- a written exercise asking you to prioritise different tasks
They are looking for evidence of good communication skills, looking at the patient as a whole - considering their social, emotional and physical problems in context. They want to see that you can work effectively as part of a team, and that you can manage your time effectively and prioritise according to clinical need as well as practical considerations (e.g. working with the other members of the primary care team etc.).
Other Deaneries have a few stations similar to the OSCE
stations, testing communication skills, perhaps a clinical scenario, and maybe one semi structured interview. Common questions include why you wish to work in General Practice, they may ask you about what you know of recent changes in primary care (new GMS cotract, no more Out of Hours for most GPs etc.).
There are many articles on applying for VTS / GP training, including answers to sample interview and application questions, and practice MCQs (for those applying in the next round) at
I hope this is helpful
