Hello friends, I am back again with a new thread which deals with everthing related to MPH course in US. This is just to isolate and sort out MPH from all other threads which deal with a similar topic. Lets share all the information here and i would try my best to answer your queries regarding MPH. Hope it would help many in serch for answers.

Hi Kanchi,
No MPH is not the same as MD in PSM
, its a little different but the same base.
With this MPH degree you can be a:
1. Health Consultant in a govt setup or NGO or a private company.
2. An Epidemiologist
3. Regional or state head for a pharmaceutical company.
4. of course teach public health at a college.
Well these are just a few, there are plenty of jobs available. But it depends on the concentration (sub-speciality) that you have choosen. Do let me know which feild you like the most and will let you know the specific job oppurtunities for that.

im back again with my queries. I would like to know wat is the current scene regarding scholarships and aid for MPH.wich universities are offering aid? How difficult has it become getting aid in MPH progs.plz let me know

my kudos to advisor for starting this thread.a lot of medicos are applyn for mph. im sure ur valuable advise would definately come in useful.maybe other mph aspirants can put in their word and advise to help every1.

Hi Dana,
Well that is a very difficult question you have put across. Still i will try to answer it to the best of my ability.
There are scholarships and aid available for MPH and the scenario is not that bleak. You have to get the basic idea of aid. The top schools have greater funds to give their students scholarships and aids, but due to the reputation only take exceptional students, and invariably get aid by working under some professor.
The universities which don't come under the Ivy league, give small tution waivers to attract more students.
but overall it all depends on your credentials and academics.
Just a helpful note, that whenever you apply to a university ask for a scholarship or finacial aid. You may get it, or you wont, but atleast that would make you happy that you tried. And you have nothing to lose, everything to gain.
Some colleges on admission don't give aid, but from second semester onwards give aids. Some colleges write on their admissions page that they don't give scholarships, but that is just to defer the high loads of students to just getting the highly motivated ones in.
I also agree some colleges give aid easily while some won't even give your scholarship application even a second look before they toss it in the dustbin, well here again it all depends on your credentials.
I thought this small info on the types of scolarships would help.
There are four kind of scholarships :
Fellowships: These are the best sort of scholarship. You are recognized as a fellow i.e. the university wants you to come at work at the university. Your fee is waived and you are given stipend in addition. You are just expected to concentrate on work. These are generally handed out by university or department and you are not found to any professor.
Research Assistantship: These are the next best thing. Here a professor funds you (tuition waiver + stipend) and you are supposed to work for him.
Teaching Assistantship: These include funding but you would have to teach undergrads to earn those funds. These are not rated so high because teaching takes away too much of time and not everyone likes teaching.
Graduate Assistants: These involve variable amount of funding but involves carrying out various jobs in the university like grading papers etc.
Partial Tuition Waiver: Something is better than nothing

Hi Kanchan,
Nice to know that you are interested in Pharmacology
. You can go into M.S/PhD in Phar in US. Yes i agree it is a little difficult to get into it due to the lack of knowledge and oppurtunities for research. By knowledge i dont mean academics, it is due to just the 1 and a half years of superficial pharm we study which is not intergrated with, mol. bio. genetics, cell bio, Physiology
, Biochemistry
, biology etc.
Why don't you try for MS in pharm if you are really interested in that. Here are the colleges that offer Pharmacology
along with their rankings. Hope it helps(Its at the end of this message).
Yes MPH people can very well go into reasearch, its called a DrPH, a doctorate in Public Health. This will a PhD program, but you can do it once you have completed MPH.
Also you can work in a pharmaceutical compay as a consultant or FDA inspector even after doing MPH, so you are back again to your favourite subject - Pharmacology
