British Medical Association's activities to help refugee doctors
14 Jun 2004

The International Department of the British Medical Association (BMA) advises overseas doctors on working in the UK and advises members on working abroad. It also co-ordinates the Association's work with international medical bodies, runs the International Committee and implements its decisions.

Refugee week, 14 to 20 June 2004

Refugee Week aims to celebrate the enormous contribution of refugees to the UK and promote understanding about the reasons why people seek sanctuary, through arts, cultural and educational events that take place all across the UK.

Refugee doctors

The BMA has recently been campaigning on behalf of refugee doctors who, having fled persecution in their own countries, have sought asylum in the UK and now wish to rebuild their careers.

They wish to establish themselves professionally as quickly as possible, but are frequently frustrated by financial and practical obstacles to registration and may find it very difficult to integrate into the UK medical system.

They are often forced to rely on social security benefits instead of contributing their skills and knowledge to the NHS.

Many different organisations are interested in helping refugee doctors, and the BMA is working with a variety of bodies to ensure a co-ordinated approach. Further information about the problems which refugee doctors face, and the work which is already underway can be found on these pages in bma website.
