Quick Scroll FAQ: What is a research position? 06.15.04 (4 years ago) #1

Hi everybody.
In this forum and all other USMLE forums I hear people talking about getting a research position after USMLE before getting residency . Are they talking about phd studentship or what ? I suppose for phd you need GRE score . Again if it is phd then you will be put 3 years back . I do not understand . Somebody please clarify the whole situation . Can anyone tell me where I can find a research position or refer me a to some source ?

Thank you for your earliest attention .

All kinds of research can be found in USA, the only problem is what's your interest. Scientific research is mainly carried out by two ways, one is in the Department of University, the other is in the government institute, like NIH. Some companies also conduct research, but they are more commercial. Usually if you're offered a post by a University, they will sign you the document necessary for obtaining the visa, and that's basically all you need for the visa. At this point, American are more friendly. To find potential research post, you can refer to some public advertisement online, like NIH web. Some journal also provides job ads, like nature, science. More specific way is to go to the website of the University, there usually is job page telling you post vacancy. Hope these can be help.

"Which carries more value eventually, while applying / getting into a residency..........is it doing an externship/observership/reasearch assistant ship"

Think, I must think.....A real answer, not sugar coated (because you all want the truth and not what you want to hear, nicht wahr?) - and remember, this is what I have seen in my experience, which won't be the same for all the programs or specialties.....

An externship is the most valuable - especially a US hospital externship. Also, if you have completed any rotations while a student - in a US hospital - that's important too.

Research? Very important if the project went to publication and you were one of the primary investigators.

Observership? Well, it depends. If performed in a hospital, that's good. If performed in a physician's office - it won't carry the same weight as any of the above.

hi all,
well i agree with supermacho but in part only. firstly i would appreciate if the difference btw externship and internship be clarified. till that very time i find research to be far more beneficial than even observership whether it goes for publication or not.. but mind it that it's of some standard. US authorities really love interest in research(atleast this is what i feel). rest all depends on personal luck and yeah no jacks or pullays required (although acquintances here and there may ease ur way thru) to get into a residency.

waiting for externship clarification and how to go abt it!!!!

dear ,
at the port of entry u'll be stamped of the duration of ur stay there ( never more than 6 months ) . 1 years or 10 years visa doesn't mean that u may stay in usa for 1 full year or 10 years!!!!!!!
well after u give ur exam u may look for almost anything that may add to ur cv --research, observership etc. as long as it's non paid , at times it may be paid ( but u'll have to cough out the money not american employer, icon_twisted.gif )
so good luck for future
