FAQ: How is Das Textbook of Surgery?
Dear RxPGites,

I have just entered "final year" icon_confused.gif of MBBS. I bought Das Textbook of Surgery and have started reading it. I just wanted to know how is the book. Whether it is worth spending time on the book? I have Bailey and Love's Short Practice of Surgery also and I plan to read it also, since it is important from entrance point of view.

So, I wanted to know whether reading Das textbook is worth the time spent. And also, whether it is of much use in the entrances. Please share your views.

See you,
sajjanshenoy

hi ...i think for passing ur undergrad comfortably n to score well u'll just need a gud read of bailey backed up wid a quick revesion of manipal ... das's text is gud in the sense lotsa info ... but i think is a slight confusion as it seems he's only tried to club his clinical n shrt cases ka gyan in the textbook ... i think its better to avoid reading it !!! so since u've got bailey ...stick to it my fren !!! wish u all the very best !!!

bailey & lovely is good , i think that

bailey + manipal - its the latest combination used in my college.... das is too exhaustive and such an amount to info is not really required and most of the mcqs are framed from B&L

DAS IS A REALLY VERY GOOD FOR WHO WANTS TO KNOW THE SUBJECT.

das isnt that good compared to manipal shenoy and bailey-love.
if u need to study comprehensively go for sabiston or schwartz.these books seem bulky but if u read limited topics they'd prove more useful.actually for UG studies we need to select topics and read from the books of reference.but ca-gall bladder is only discussed in das so dont forget tot read that.bye

Bailey is Hopeless from the Entrance point of view.

Bailey is the BEST (I repeat "the best") book for an undergraduate to "know" Surgery. The language is simple (yet of high standard), does not give useless information, teaches from practise point of view.

Bailey is a book that should be read in the First Clinical Year. It is very good for Clinical Knowledge, but NOT Suited for

1. Theory Paper
2. MCQs[/quote]

Bruno

Das text book of Surgey is better than Bailey in the following regards

1. MCQs
2. Theory

Bruno

For all those who have given comments about Das, can i have the pleasure of knowing as to how many pages you have infact read from the DAS book.

Just read few chapters from bailey and read the same chapters from Das and you will know the difference

Bruno

Read in the following Order during MBBS

1. Clinical Surgery - Das
2. Robbins
3. Bailey
4. Surgical Short cases
5. Das Concise Text book of Surgery
6. Operative Surgery

Thanks Bruno on that. Even I thought the same when I bought Das, that it is good from theory point of view and it is also very simple and well structured which makes it easy to remember and reproduce things in the exams.

Thanks again.

See ya,

my seniors tell me that Text of surg by S Das is too exhaustive... which is really not needed at UG level and most of the info is outdated... and MCQs are rarely set from S Das. so the trend now in my college is B&L + Manipal Manual (shenoy) + Bhattacharya (short cases in surg) + clinical S Das.

I hv read das textbook and i found it 2 b a gr8 book. The language is good although diagrams r not tht gud but its much easier 2 grasp the subject. After reading this buk I started enjoying surgery.
choice of buk is an individual choice. Some buk which i may like others may not find it tht gud.I suggest u 2 go thru the buk 2 get an idea.
All the best.

Heard that questions are being set from standard textbook like bailey or swartz. Is it true?? In that case das will be of no use..

I asked my Sir this question. He said he did his UG from the college where the author is from. He told me there it wasn't recommended to use his text book since its never updated, Bailey and Love's on the other hand is updated constantly.

Which topics should we read from Sabiston?
