The magnitude of stimulation is proportionate to H+ ions conc.Thus the effect of CO2 on respiration r mainly due to its movement into CSF & brain interstitial fluid, whrer it increases H+ ion conc & stimulate receptors sensitive H+.

EXACTLY folks!! that is my confusion!! shld it be CO2 or hydrogen ions??? Though its CO2 which is the source, the final one which is actually acting is H+ ions....so what shld we mark as the answer?

I dont hv exact reference page..But in Ganong Respiration.Chemical receptor of respiration.

Pco2 is the main cause for stimulating carotid bodies even in cases where pH is 7.3 - 7.5

So, i think answer is CO2....also given in Guides too..But ofcourse not very sure..
