mudit khanna--AI-05 in its explanation says--
thyroid hormones increases the activity of type 2 pneumocytes.--hence surfactant production.

but i ve read in iams notes that steroid --increases surfactant prodn.
while insulin ,thyroxine --decrease its production..

pls clarify the role of thyroxine related to surfactant prodn--with a ref--as the two statemnets are contradictory.

hi manu !!

icon_arrow.gif insulin decreases the surfactant production by downregulating the rna production for surfactant protein synthesis

icon_arrow.gif thyroid hormones increase the surfactant protein production... n they have got a therapeutic role in ARDS in preterm infants..

see thyroid hormone increases the activity of surfactant---soo rds(due to surfactant depletion)is common in hypothyroidsm.

steroids actiavate the surfactant maturation, especially when the steroids levels r high in both mother n baby at term---soo in a preterm child rds is more common

insulin decreases the surfactant activity, hence diabetic mothers r more prone to rds

to sum it all rds is common in--hypothyroidsm,preterm infant and diabetic mothers.

hope its clear
