OBSTRUCTION OF THE URETEROPELVIC JUNCTION.
This is the most common obstructive lesion in childhood and is caused most often by congenital stenosis of the ureteropelvic junction. Ureteral kinks, fibrous bands, and apparently aberrant vessels are usually secondary phenomena caused by dilatation of the pelvis above the obstruction. Ureteropelvic junction obstruction most commonly presents as:
(1) maternal ultrasonography revealing fetal hydronephrosis
(2) a palpable renal mass in a newborn
(3) abdominal, flank, or back pain
(4) a febrile urinary tract infection ...or...
(5) hematuria after minimal trauma.

Quote:

The most common abdominal mass in a neonate is
A. renal dysplasia—hydronephrosis
B. Wilms' tumor
C. neuroblastoma
D. Meckel diverticulum
E. ovarian teratoma

The above Q is a direct pick from Nelson CD book..!
and this is the answer and explanation given....
Quote:

renal dysplasia-hydronephrosis.....

Renal masses are the most common lesions in neonates. Hydronephrosis and multicystic-dysplastic lesions are the most common renal masses.

but...........this is from
Quote:

Nelson textbook of pediatrics-15th ed.

Dr. Sids....can you give more details on your reference? Because I could not find the line that said neuroblastoma as the most common abdominal mass....thought it can present as an abdominal mass too!..but i am talking only from 15 ed....icon_sad.gif I have no idea what the latest ed speaks on this aspect!
