Quick Scroll Renal dysplasia.. 04.30.06 (2 years ago) #5

It refers to focal \, diffuse or segmentally arranged primitive structures esp primitive ducts, resulting from abnormal metanephric differentiation..
If cysts are present, it is called cystic dysplasia.

Multicystic kidney is a congenital condition in which the kidney is replaced by cysts, does not function & may result from ureteral atresia, incidence being 1/2000, it is not synonymus with polycystic kidney disease, which is an inherited disorder & affects both kidneys, while multicystic kidney is unilateral & not inherited.

So, Jayanta, Multicystic dysplastic kidney should be your unilateral renal dysplasia?

It presents with mass in abdomen in newborn. may present with renin-mediated hypertension or Wilms tumour arising out of it.
Nephrectomy is recommended if there is abdominal mass, cysts enlarge, stromal core increases in size, hypertension developes..

Ask-Upmark kidney (just for additional knowledge)

also called segmental hypoplasia

it refers to small kidneys not more than 35 g, with one or more deep grooves on lateral convexities, underneath which the parenchyma consists of tubules resembling those in thyroid gland. Most have severe hypertension, which is controlled by nephrectomy.
