hello, i am a NIMHANS
alumni..... well did my MD few yrs back.
selection used to be on the 80 -20 rule.
the top 45 candiates in theory are short listed from the enternce exam.
their theory marks carry 80% weightage to the interview.
the interview conducted has 20% weightage. now as you are aware there is marginal diffrence between the top chap's score and the 45 th chap. ( given the current competition) so the performance in the interview, where they ask practical base q tilts the selection more towards candidates who have exp.
adda to this the fact that some of the candidates - esp the top ranks might not show up or might have been also selected for DM
or MCh
courses in NIMHANS
. I remember that the top guy during our enterance time got 1st rank in MDpsych, DM
neuro and 2nd rank in MCh
for the year's theory ENT
.
hope that ans you.

I'll try to explain the scenario. People who had taken the test last year might remember , there was just one exam for all the three programs that is MD psych, DM
and MCh
, BUT one has to apply separately for all three programs. The first list given above is a comprehensive list, i think, which is based on the marks scored by each and everyone that gave the test. Now if you had applied only for DM
, even if you figure on top of the list you are not eligible to appear for MD psych counseling. I guess thats what happened last year...or maybe the top 17 were plainly not interested.
This year to avoid confusion NIMHANS
conducted the test for MD psych in feb and that for the superspecialities will be in june.
This year all the top 11 candidates in the MD psych ranklist joined the program.
Hope my post helps to clear the confusion. From my personal experience I find the NIMHANS
test fair and the admission process transparent.

This is regarding MD psych exam. Questions are 70% neuro+psych and rest general. 160 questions in all and 2 hours, 1 mark for every right answer and minus 0.5 for every wrong answer. So one has to be really cautious while answering. Time is adequate to go atleast 3 rounds, very few clinical vignette type qs, most are factual type. Around 60% of the questions were from pulse/salgu/cross. Psych questions were especially tough. Most of the scoring will be done in neuro and general, but psych will be the decider.
Books to read:
1. psych- ahuja+pretest Psychiatry
(Mcgrawhill)+psych qs from ashish gupta, mudit khanna, pulse/salgu/cross. Areas to stress are psychopharmacology, substance related disorders, schizo and mood disorders, Anorexia and bulimia nervosa, REM and NREM etc
2. neuro- Harrison. Read...make notes...do mcqs from the above books , go retro. Important areas are Dementia, epilepsy and anti epileptics, neuromuscular disorders, SAH, EDH,hypothalamic nuclei etc
3. Robbins- CNS &PNS, Neuroanatomy from IB singh or high yield.
4. Ganong- neurophysiology and vision, hearing etc
5. General- ag+mk or pulse/salgu, i.e whichever strategy you are adopting for next year's aipg will get you adequately prepared for qs from this area.
Here are a few questions that were asked this year.
psych: doc of OCD, amotivational synd, characteristic of schizo- delusions/hallucination etc
neuro: dejerine roussy synd-nucleus involved, astasia-abasia,lat medullary synd, not a metabotropic receptor-NMDA, isoprinosine-SSPE,hyperthyroidism-hyperkalemic PP etc
General: Anova test
Remember REVISION is the most important factor in any test. Revise as many times as possible.
All the best to you guys. If Psychiatry
is your calling then NIMHANS
is where you got to be.
If you have any more questions...just ask
Hari
