How to go to Australia
through "occupational trainee&qu

Well friends, this question arose sometime back, if I am right in the "various pathways to Australia
" thread. Am sure plabotomy remembers it. It was not taken seriously by anyone, as all of us thought that only a PG can go there as an occupationa trainee. Moreover he/she has to pay for it. Atleast this is what webiste says.
Now, I know of two friends who have gone there after postgraduation, on an occupational trainee visa. They are not paying, but being paid, that too working in urban areas. They can gradually shift on to a GP or specialist work after studying the situation there. The only drawback being renewing visa every year.
I shall try getting more information, as one of them has just reached there. In the meanwhile can I expect others to chip in with anything they know about this route.
NIC, Plabotomy, Delhiboy etc etc.....shed some more light.

This is going to be my 1st ever post on this forum. I found it very useful in getting an idea about AMC and Australian medical system and the oppertunities etc.
I was recently offered a job contract for a year in NSW, and the medical staffing told me that they are nominating me for the Occupational Training visa as the visa 457 might take ages to get processed and that they want me to join asap.(they have applied for both, just incase). Well, they did mention about charging me $220 for your application fee plus $270 registration fee when I land there, but,'confused' is it what you are talking about?. Moreover i am not a PG, just did a year of SHO thing in UK and was about to do my MRCP
-1 when I got this offer, still they nominated for occupational visa. Maybe I am required to pay for it at the time of applying for visa. I will keep you guys posted about it.
Cheers!

Hi Shershah, welcome to RxPG
Hope you find the forums useful.
Thx for posting. Yeah may be both of us are probably talking about the same route. Tell me, wont you be paid during hte year of contract. If yes, then I dont think it is a bad route at all. Initially I thought one will never get paid as an occupational trainee.
BTW occupational trainee post might have been given to you based on your work experience as SHO. And what I unerstand is that there are various levels of entry. May be u enter at a different level compared to one who has completed PG. Please clarify this from your sources and contribute to the forum. Not many are aware of this route.
Cheers and Welcome again.

Hi Confused.
Well, Occupational training visa thing is not something that WE can choose to land in Australia
. It could be one of the many visas that the hospital might choose to get you there. Like, the medical staffing told me that she is trying to get a SPONSORSHIP for the VISA 457, but as it takes much longer time to get approval (from the sponsors, whichever organisation that is) she also nominated me for the OCCUPATIONAL TRAINING VISA (VISA 442). She was also mentioning about the MEDICAL PRACTITIONER VISA (VISA 422) that it could be an option too, but occupational visa was to her, the easiest way. (I know its a bit confusing).
And its not specific for the doctors ofcourse.
Nutshell is, that unless you get a sponsor/job offer, theres nothing that anybody can do on his part to get occupational training visa.
Lemme paste some stuff, (if i could) still unsure about the policies of this forum.
'' The occupational trainee visa allows foreign nationals to undertake a supervised, workplace-based training program in Australia
. The training must provide occupational trainees with additional skills in their occupation or field of expertise.
An occupational training program needs two participating entities:
• An occupational trainee
• An Australian nominating organisation to nominate a trainee and provide the training.
An occupational training program must:
be closely related to the trainee's current occupation, field of study or area of expertise, enhance the trainee's current skill level ,be at least 70% in a supervised workplace
not impact upon occupational training opportunities for Australian citizens and permanent residents.
An occupational trainee visa also allows a trainee and any eligible accompanying family members to stay in Australia
for the period of the training program.
Note: An occupational trainee visa cannot be granted unless the nomination has been approved by the department.
Occupational trainees must wait until the nomination has been approved before lodging an application for occupational trainee visa.
A nomination for the Australian nominating organisation is valid for 12 months from the date approved by the department.
An occupational trainee visa is valid for up to two years, plus two months to allow the trainee and family members to make arrangements to leave Australia
, or to apply for another visa.
Note: If the training cannot be completed in two years, the trainee can apply for a second occupational trainee visa. The trainee and the nominator must meet the eligibility requirements again. ''
Cheers.

Hey Shershah,
Thats a great post. Good information about occupationa training. All that I was looking for. Now I have a good idea of what happened with my friends.
First you get a job. Getting it might be easier if one has experience or post graduate degree.
Second you apply for a visa. Thats where this Occupational training Visa might come handy as its easy to get, the only hitch being a limit of one year.
Third, you change your visa status to a GP visa or something else in the one year that you are there.
Fourth, if you have gone there without a PG you might have to clear AMC etc within that timeframe. Alternatively if you have finished PG, you can apply for the Assessment/EXemption committee too. (Hope I am right).
Fifth, you then become a specialist.
Now the advantage of this route if I may call it, is that you can be put in urban areas and more importantly put your foot on Australian soil. Lets keep the discussion going. We might clear lot of doubts. The major doubt now is what Visa do ppl going on AON get. Hope I will be answered in Plabotomy's thread. Shall check it out again.
Isnt there anyone else who can type a few lines in this thread???
