Hospital outpatient attendance is not a measure of incidence of a disease because;

1)there is no reference population
2)all cases may not report to the hospital
3)both old and new cases will attend
4)attendance will depend on the services offered.

for calculating any rate first thing u need is to have a defined population..... the basic difference between hospital and a health centre is that ... health centre has a defined population from a restricted area called catchment area.... all the cases reporting to the particular health centre are strictly from the catchment area. In hospital u can get patients from anywhere in country or outside the country... so the data from most of the tertiary care institutes and hospital can never be utilized for calculating the rates

hope this is clear to u all icon_smile.gif

if u need further explanation .. pls ask
