It is the Electrons

Intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) is a specialized treatment technique that uses either electron or orthovoltage irradiation at the time of surgery directly to tumour or tumour bed. The main advantage confirmed in many clinical trials, is that bulk of radiation can be concentrated in variety of cancers while as adjacent surgically mobilized normal tissues can be spared. The key role of radiotherapy is to control loco-regional disease and local control usually increases with dose excalation but, not, infrequently the dose that can be delivered safely is limited by tolerance of normal tissues. So this limitation can be overcome by IORT.
