Disulfiram is one of several aldehyde dehydrogenase inhibitors that raise the plasma level of acetaldehyde following alcohol ingestion. Increases in acetaldehyde cause a variety of symptoms including flushing, nausea, vomiting, thirst, palpitations, chest pain, vertigo, and hypotension.1 Many medications, when taken with alcohol, have caused reactions which mimic the disulfiram reaction. Medications associated with the disulfiram-like reaction include: metronidazole, chloramphenicol, nitrofurantoin, tolbutamide, chlorpropamide, glyburide, glipizide, quinacrine, tolazamide, griseofulvin, chloral hydrate, acetohexamide and several third-generation cephalosporins.2,3
