Syphilis transmission usually occurs transplacentally or by sexual contact. Other modes of transmission include contact with contaminated blood or infected tissues. Children encounter 2 forms of syphilis: acquired syphilis, transmitted almost exclusively by sexual contact; and congenital syphilis, resulting from transplacental transmission of spirochetes.
