Quick Scroll News - Pharmac - FDA approves inhalable version of insulin 01.29.06 (2 years ago) #1

Pfizer Inc's "Exubera" becomes the first inhalable version of insulin to win federal approval.

The device is about the size of an eyeglass case which delivers the insulin as a dry powder packaged in inhalable capsules to the lungs via the mouth.

But the FDA said that it will not replace the need to inject the hormone occassionaly. The diabetics will also have to continue to prick their fingers occassionally to test blood sugar levels.

Patients will have to check their lungs before using the drug and at six- to 12-month intervals thereafter.
