Analysis: Whats the significance of MRCS
now?

whats going to be the fate of MRCS
? or candidates who has passed all parts of MRCS
/
there,s some doubt creeping into my mind regarding this
since the introduction of foundation programmes, and a candidate trained upto a consultant from foundation year, wheres does MRCS
stands?
whats going to be its importance or validity?
now anyone can write MRCS
all parts without finishing their training/
and recently i received a mail from RCS regarding my query that, we do not need to show logbook in order to write MRCS
?
it looks like they are also in money minding business like GMC, allowing everyone to write exam irrespective what he or she has completed?
its not i dont want others to write , even i am not eligible to write the final part/
but why so much lineancy in exam pattern so soon?
and if we clear MRCS
, where we stand in terms of foundation training programmme?
as college says, that you will be competing for specialty training programmes/
but when a foundatio year candidate carries onto become a consultant, where we gonna get the post?
and without completing the required training in the basic level , are we going to be offered this ST posts?
and does these foundation candidates need to follow this path in their surgical career, do they have to give MRCS
and then FRCS, are they giving FRCS straight away?
hoping to get some answers , esp from those who liaised with royal college regarding same?
thanks

Exactly... like giligilli said this is a very difficilt Q!
Candidates who have passed MRCS
and have obtained the Diploma are eligible for Registrar level posts....
Those who make it to SpR level / obtain an NT Number by Aug 2007 would be able to make it to the Consultsnt level.
After Aug 2007 Candidates completing the foundation Programme would move directly into specialist training in the field of their choice.
Those who are still to make a confirmed choice would have the option of taking up a fixed term non training post for upto 2 years.
I guess the current SHO's who do not make it to SpR level soon would also have this option of taking up non training posts.
I would like to add those that already have the full MRCS
and have a decent CV with all the requirements for SpR level are finding it extremely difficult to get a NTN...... after the implementation of the MMC / FP things will only become worse for the MRCS
candidate.
Also the validity and standing of the MRCS
is still in question and undecided. There has been some debate on changing/altering the MRCS
exams to meet the needs of the MMC.

i understand those entering foundation programs are progressing upto consultant grade without any hassles or need to apply again
but if they are competing for the so called specialty training posts, for the first few years they have two groups of candidates applying for the post
one, the foundation trainees, which may not have give MRCS
or given a similar exam but not at same level
second, the SHO who has given all parts of MRCS
whom do they prefer, what will the criteria for selecting one?
this is just confusing

In the context of MTAS and UK training, one of the essential criteria in person specification at ST3 level in surgical specialities is passing the MRCS.
No MRCS => only eligible for ST2
cheers

There is a new system of exam that will be equvalent to MRCS
but with some mordifications. For instance part 2 will now comprise MCQ and oral/clinical session. If you have not done any part of the exam up to this point you cannot do it any more in the old system. However if you have done any part you will be allowed to go on with the old system.
My advice is that whoever has done any part should go on and complete the remaining part(s) as that will exempt you from the new equivalent if you at all wish to pursue your career in UK. I do not think MRCS
will be made valueless at all.
I hope this is of help.
