Friends,
BACKGROUND
I will be finishing my mrcpsychiatry exam this march/may --Hopefully--and will be going into my 3yrs of post MRCPsych
training called spr (specialist registrar) post in august or so of this year.
if the current scenario persisists in uk, where almost 600 people are passiing this exam (mrc Psychiatry
) and entering into spr training, then by the time i am eligible for consultnat posts in 2009 i am sure there will be only a few or none left and there will be an intense competition. so i am looking for GREEENER PASTURES IN TERMS OF MONEY IN 2009.
QUERIES
Can anyone tell me how are consultant level posts filled up in Australia
??
also--MOST IMPORTANTLY-what would be a consultant psychiatrists avg salary be there ???
can i earn more money if i want to, by doing extra work or is it like uk now--where you can not earn money other than the salary ???
THANKS IN ANTICIPATION FOR THE ANSWERS
i anyone wants to know anything abt Psychiatry
in uk, i can answer them
cheers

Hi, I think your query is too specific for anyone from this forum to answer. Please contact the australian college of Psychiatry
or recruitment agencies for that, they might have the answers to your queries.
Regarding your question whether you can do any other job apart from being a psychiatrist, well I think that will depend on your visa status, but you certainly will be paid for doing overtime work in the hospital as a doctor.
Regards.

that was really USEFULL, to compare the salries here and there. thanks v much for that.
in my original letter, i did not mean work outside doing some other jobs-wat i meant was if i wanted to do overtime would i be able to do. that question was amply anwsered by this article.

HI Gobcee,
Sorry for the delay in replying-change of residence and job to blame.
Reg Psychiatry
jobs in uk, as is with all other jobs, it is very tough
but not as tough compared to surgery or medicine definitely.
and given your experience of 3yrs md and 1 and half yrs of post md experience, i think you stand a better chance than others----but only if you complete one or two attachments here and do some clinical audit in that time you should be able to secure a job, now, in about 5-6 months, after passing PLAB
but i can not accurately predict the situation after 2 yrs but seeing the current situation and trend, i would say that in 2 years any overseas candidates chances of getting a training post is almost nil
this is becaus of few things
1. the new initiative of MMC modernising medical careers ---here. they are planning it such a wy that people from our of uk can not gain entry into the prosposed run through training of 6 yrs being proposed after the 2 yr of foundation jobs. the foundations jobs are open for only those who have not done any prho or internship in their own countries. so inefeect all of us outsiders are ruled out
2. the idle 2000-3000 post PLAB
drs allready in uk who are waiting in the wings to get into trainings at sho levels have more chance than you since they have now a foothold in the system
3. the current visa, registration and other living costs which make the venture very very risky in investment and return terms.
if you plan to come to uk at some risk this is the last time that you will have some minimal chance of getting into training post.
after 2 yrs --NONE
i hope i have been able to explain it ok---if u have any more doubts feel free to ask.
cheers
