Announcement
Alteration to the Part 1 MCQ paper for the Intercollegiate MRCS Examination
There will be a change to the style of questions that will appear in the Part 1 MCQ
examination.
Commencing with the paper in September 2006, there will be an increasing
proportion of questions that will have the format of a single best answer (SBA) to
gradually replace the current multiple true/false question (multiple T/F) format.
It is emphasised that this is only a change to the style of question and it does not
reflect any change in the knowledge that is expected for the MCQ examination.
The following is an example of a SBA question –
A 67-year-old woman is brought to the Accident & Emergency Department having
fallen on her left arm. There is an obvious clinical deformity and X-ray demonstrates
a mid-shaft fracture of the humerus. She has lost the ability to extend the left wrist
joint. The nerve that has been damaged with the fracture is
a. The axillary nerve
b. The median nerve
c. The musculocutaneous nerve
d. The radial nerve
e. The ulnar nerve
Correct answer: d

The standard of the examination will remain same, I believe. Parhaps only the pattern will change.
