Public Health- A multilateral work arena

I am a physician but never experienced the life of a clinician as a true professional. I am not considering the internship period. How does it feel the regular activities of a clinician? I don’t know about it as I was not in the business. But I observe this in my friends, working in hospitals/clinics. Admitting and attending the new patients, follow up to old patients, taking round with the professor, supervise the interns/students/juniors, in the OT, clinical meetings and some going to private practice in the evening. I don’t know how much they enjoy (May be they enjoy very much) this but now being a public health professional, thinking of those recurrent daily must activities probably I personally wouldn’t feel comfortable had I been a clinician.

Incidentally I am in Public health profession for more than 4 years along with some of classmates from my medical college. We are holding mid management level positions in our respective public health based organizations. As long as my experience goes, typically these positions in Bangladesh and may be in other developing countries provides exposure to a wide array of work. A public health professional is a developmental professional who potentially can have experience in a diversity of works/assignments. For example, in the early morning s/he is 300 km away in a rural village supervising the field staffs in taking anthropometry of the children, in the late afternoon attends an important meeting with donors in the Head office and in the night same day s/he is on board in an international flight to abroad to attend an international workshop.

-S/he writes the project concept paper, planning, designing the project, prepares & reviews the budget, corresponds with the donors, prepares periodic workplan, monitoring and evaluating the project, generating periodic reports and disseminate the lessons learnt.

-S/he participates in national/international conferences, seminars, workshops, presents papers, works as a resource person in the workshops.

-S/he representing the company visits/meets partner organizations/important stakeholders.

- S/he could be involved in project based research- design field survey, coordinate and train field team, conduct field survey, organize and analyze field data and prepare the research report, make manuscripts, abstracts, submits to journal for publications, present the finding in meetings/seminars/ conferences, voice up the recommendations to feed at the national policy level.

Here goes the diversity and dynamism in work hand in hand. These entire activities are done in a team work. This career could be so much vibrant, work exposure could be so much versatile for a deserving and proactive professional. All these activities are directed to the betterment of health (promotive, preventive and limited curative) for the deprived mass of population.

As a public health professional nothing feels more stimulating to serve for humanity the moment I am in the vast expanse of the rural fields amidst hundreds of underprivileged people, this is a divine feel and being a physician feels most satisfying.

i have taken DPH RECENTLY.. i read ur article....is it true that public health official can also go abroad with indian degree for workshops....plz throw some light in this areas real scenarios...as my knowledge is raw in this area.
