Quick Scroll MD Anesthesia Gujarat , BJMC Ahmedabad. 03.25.06 (2 years ago) #1

Hi,

I am in my senior residency in BJMC ahmedabad.

As far as anesthesia goes, look for the following from a medical college:

1. Type of surgeries attended by anesthetists.
2. Kind of monitoring infrastructure within the department
3. Work load of residency
4. Academic environment.
5. Finally, Pay.

I know it is kind of tough - putting the number 5 at where it is, but guys trust me on this one.

BJMC
MD Anesthesia:

Good work- we have a lot of surgeries in Civil hospital, except probably CVTS which is not too much coz the Dept has been chronically understaffed.
Routine work is aplenty.
Amazing quantity.
ability to work is the sole determinant of the kind of work you are given.
Pay is decent 8-9K.
Otherwise it can be described as standard.

(I am from LTMMC mumbai- i did my UG there;I did work there as a resident for 6 months .I can compare Bj to ltmmc and say that the work here is comparable given the relatively limited monitoring infrastructure that we have here.
Given a choice- go for Mumbai.
Then Ahmedabad.
If there are any other available metros in between please look them up.)

Advantages of Gujarat in a nutshell-
Good training in basic techniques- quantity over quality.
The work attitude here is different. More practical- if it can be done let us do it.
Good shopping.
only as many (movie)theatres as a resident can attend in residency. ( in mumbai , it was so many theatres, so little time....)
Oh yea, forgot this one- anesthetists here manage the Medical ICU as well. So that is a plus.

Disadvantages:

If you do not speak the language- applicable practically every where.
If you want to focus on academics and stuff- tough luck- got to manage the time.
Anesthesia is still not a hottie in Gujarat - not a cream branch actually - so the residency image complex holds. But it does not get to you if you are good- whichever branch you are in- you got to be good, you got to be sincere.
The first year here will be maddeningly tight in terms of work and getting used to the system- but generally you fit in - or they mould you(hehehe - kidding) this is applicable everywhere.
The climate- hotttt summers 42-45 and dry. cool winters 8-22. mad rains. that is india.
As far as the seats go - there are about 7 seats in the md- this was the old system that i came in through- usually they offer the seats of CIVIL, CANCER hospital and KIDNEY hospital in the order of merit- but there have been years when it has been random..Dont fret- Cancer hospital has oncosurgeries, KIDNEY has nephro- you will miss the routine day to day stuff at civil- but when the 3 years are over- you will still be definitely a good inducer- or may be better- coz the work quality in these two places is quite, quite good too!

Just signing off on this one- talk to a few close people who are doing residency, and talk to a few who have finished it, whichever subject you are interested in.
RELIABLE people...
Make a list of your subjects.
Make a list of YOUR priorities- close to home-(many girls i met rated this high...); language; food and accomodation; seniors(secondary- usally life is tough man!);
academics; weather( secondary); attitude to all-indians(fine here, unless you are oversmart- but that too is universally applicable I guess)
Make a list of colleges that meet YOUR demands(dont give in to the mob mentality thing)

At 3 in the am, I write this for I can remember how tough it was for me to come to a choice about what I wanted to do.
I dont know where I am going, but I know now atleast where I am.

Pray hard.
Good luck on the day of counselling.
Take care.
Anoikis.

hi i can tell u about m d gen med at bjmc ahmdebad. if u opt become a good doctor better opt for some differnt palce. the work will so much that u can hardly open harrison text books and no way a phsycican can become good with out proper knowledge of that simple books harrison and there is nothing called academics at that place . so think u want to haev only pateint exposure not clincial exposure then uc an opt that seat
my adivce u can take same seat is differnt college that would be better option
but when u go to all india counsleeling all will say bjmc is too good
but when u reach u will find it is not so good as per expectation.
