I think the answer is 1846.first clinical use was by horace wells .
but the first public demonstratin was by morton -of ether as anaethesia.that is now marked as world anesthesia day

hey partha..questions says first SUCCESSFUL demonstration..

H.G wells hd given an unsuccessful demonstration of nitrous oxide...

first SUCCESSFUL demonstration ws given by morton on 16th october 1946..
clinically marked as WORLD Anaesthesia DAY!
