Quick Scroll FAQ: How to Prepare for GRE in one month? 04.05.06 (2 years ago) #1

Hi all,

It was immesnse pleasure reading posts on this site and now now its even great to be a part of it now.
I'm planning for GRE in the month of May2006. So thats exactly a month or so. Not prepared much but i hope that will be able to cover the most of coursework due to habit of extensive cramming and intense preparation during mbbs and mle prep.
Kindly give the honest opinion if it is really possible to get throught the exam in 1 month prep (well I'm done only with Barron's till date in 10 days).
It would be great help if some of the experienced members can guide regarding the strategy , books, material to be done in this last month.
Awaiting your reply.

ciao

Quick Scroll plan of action! 04.07.06 (2 years ago) #3

HI,
Thnak you so much for your reply. I thought that no new member is replied on this forum as everyone is busy with regular "hot" topics.
Well, I'm from Nagpur preparing for USMLE with GRE as my permit toenter the system. Atleast I find it better way although views may differ.
Don't need great scores niether great program.
If you are also studying for GRE in fast track, please let me know. Many others like us can mutually help each other for cracking GRE by "divide and rule" strategy.
We all can have a an issue and argument topic posted daily which will make a large pool of solved Qs in a month for reference of everyone and at the same time will benefit those who contribute as they'll also be in practice of typing in time bound conditions.
What do you say????
If u can manage other memebers to get into this plan it will be great, else "ekla chalo re"!! anyway its best to set an example to make other realise the importance of something.
How about you? What's your plan? Have you registered with ETS for date?
Hope to recieve reply from like minded people.........
all the best!

Quick Scroll GRE Crash Course 04.09.06 (2 years ago) #4

Well I've taken a date of 29th june... Still a long way to go. But have worked out a strategy that'll probably help all u guys out there who are trying to crack it in 1 month.

1. Start with the Prefix, Root-Stem, suffixes chapter in Barron.... If you are poor in vocabulary or simply dont use complex words more often, then this is the chapter you wanna start with. Simply put these 10 pages will make u understand even the most complex words by breaking them up into parts. Works great with synonyms and Anotnyms.

2. Rapidly move over to word lists. I suppose 3-4 lists a day would be helpful. More lists will simply overload your mind. Make it a poing to carry a rough book with you. Note down any unusual word that you have not encountered before in regular english use, and during further revsions just read the words from this note-book. You'll see that by the 3rd-4th revision you'll know all the words in the note-book.

3. Once the word lists is over try solving the synonyms and antonyms using the wordlists and prefix-suffix-stem-root formula.

4. By the time you finish all this - your vocab will be built up and you can easily write in great essays. I gave 4 days for essay practice.

5. You can easily do math in 7 days time... No bid deal. Simple 8-9-10th grade math. Barrons is more than enough. But try reading from your younger sister/brothers books if u have time... hehe

6. Although Barron is more than enough... try reading "Word Power Made Easy". Gr8 book. Costs only 90 bucks. Will help you a lot

Well i hope this helps you in your preps

Cheers
Vzx

Dude... 2 months is enough for GRE 's provided that you have planned a good schedule. Try studying for more than 4 hrs a day esp if you are poor in english vocab. And dont, i repeat DONT take math easily. Although it seems very easy, just keep on practicing.

I'd recommend that you read English as long as you brains can handle icon_wink.gif and then shift to 30 min - 1 hr of math... That ought to balance things off... And just to make sure that you get a good grasp on your eng Vocab, try using some of those complex words in your day to day life - for eg. in replying to mails or maybee posting in this forum... hehe

I dunno anything about job opportunities in the states after MPH. But what the heck, Who cares for MPH. It's just a means of getting entry into the states. Or maybee you might wanna finish your MPH just to increase your credentials. But in either case try to keep your mind on the main target i.e. USMLE and residency.

That's all the help i can offer

Cheers

Quick Scroll great suggestions 04.11.06 (2 years ago) #7

Hi vzx,

It was factastic. Your plan matches 95% that of mine. Typical medico's strategy for cramming during last wek of sem.
Well, if we can write the issue/argument topics per day it would be great as we are 3-4 people here. It would give us a good practise.
What do say?

and you are right! Ultimately our aim is residency and we should hurry up as its gonna be rwally tough in next 3-4 years due to UK scenario.
After GRE hope to see you guys on USMLE forum too......

Regards......

hi dude ,
by the way are u doing GRE to make it the easy way out .. it is not easy as u think . it is good if u have completed your step 1 and 2ck.

i gave my GRE last year in july . my score was 1210 . i thought one month was enough for the preparation but as u see the low score resulted. i spend 6 hours a day for one month. the books i reviewed were princeton , thomson, barrons.. of all the books barrons is the closest to the exam pattern.

did u get a cd after u registered .. do the exam .. the score u get will be the score on ur exam ... plus or minus 20 ..

No argument on that issue... GRE is not a piece of cake.. It's as tough as a turtle shell... hehe... But on a serious note, just concentrate on one exam at a time. icon_eek.gif . I have regular feedbacks from my seniors who have made it to the USA and are doing their residency. And all of them echo the same thing.

"ONE EXAM AT A TIME" icon_idea.gif

It's too tough preparing for GRE . esp the math part. I spend almost 2 hrs a day now. Have finished Barrons and moved on to some books provided by a local GRE coaching institute. This one is great too. I'd be glad to share it with ma fellow RXPGians provided they give me some time to scan it.

Coming to another piece of advice that i forgot to mention earlier: icon_idea.gif "FLASH CARDS"

Yup!!! they are an excellent means of remembering all those word-lists. I have prepared about 75 cards containing all the words in the 50 Word-lists. And i make it a point to carry atleast 10-15 along with me anywhere I go. Whenever i get some time off in my internship clinics, I just go through them and try to use them in that particular days communication (daily talks) with ma other colleagues. There's no better alternative to remembering words than using them in your day to day speech.

My typical flash card contains :

15-20 words written alphabetically on the front with the roots as well as N. ADJ. ADV., etc..

the meaning of those words on the back - This is for quick referal in case you forget what the meaning of a particular word is.

=======================

Note to "mleaspirant" -

it's a great idea to post some issue/argument topics. I'll get back to you as soon as my math part gets over. Which i assume will take another 2 weeks or so. But in the meanwhile you keep on posting your topics if any.

====================

note to "benSTAR" -

well ofcourse you can't get a good score with 1 month preps. Who told you to do such planning?? All i was emphasizing in my 1st post was that if by any means you have severe time constraints and have to finish GRE in 1 month time, then my given tactics might help you score better than what you would have scored without proper knowledge on how to prepare

And Barrons is by far the most appripriate book for GRE . To every one following this post - I'd recomment reding Barrons thoroughly first, and then go through other books like cambridge, Kaplan, etc (if you have time)

==============================

Ideal time to prepare well for GRE is about 2.5 months.

And one recieve's the powerpred CD's within 45 days of registering. If anyone wants the CD early, then one has to pay $15 for express delivery at your door step within 48 hrs. Plus there are plenty of powerprep and other exams CD's available on p2p networks across the net. Just download them and give as many practise exams as possible. I personally have 8 powerprep CD's and 5 other CD's totalling to about 31 mock GRE tests.

Hope this info helps all ppl around

Cheers

Quick Scroll i'm scared! 04.15.06 (2 years ago) #10

Hey guys,

I'm really scared after going through all your discussions. Well I've no choice but to write exam in 1 month (well now its 1.5 considering that i've already started my prep 10days before). but in my case i have full time to devote for my GRE studies with no obligations as I'm also serious about about "1 EXAM AT A TIME"
So far I'm done with my wordlist and barrons maths. Made random lists of words which i found diffuicult in a notebook which i'll be posting from time to time.
Just let me know if you have more suggestions (not scary ones) to DO IT in rest of the days.

ciao.....
