hi friends,
i have been considering taking otorhinolaryngology as a career. many of my friends have pointed out some disadvantages in choosing this subject for specialization. if you know why i should take this subject or why i should not, please advise me. also, if you know what are the options that can be persued after specialization in this subject, the good institutions for this subject - to work or to study, please help me out.
thanking you,
blackeyedpea

hi nonu, i agree with you.. although i had not worked in the field after my internship, i feel what you said is right. moreso, speaking with some seniors, i have realized that it is a new and upcoming subject with very good potential. only, getting good training will be a challenge.
if i may ask, where did you work in ENT ? i mean in which hospital? is the training good there? and what kind of surgeries are done there? please let me know.

im doing my postgraduation (MS) in ENT . its a very interesting and upcoming subject in our country. like any upcoming subject, challenges will be to remain in the cutting edge of the subject without becoming obsolete, getting the right training and experience and investing wisely your time, money and effort. you have the chance to make it big and to flop miserably. if you feel the challenge is worth the reward, go for it.

if you're still in your second year of MBBS its too early to decide on a particular field of specialization, unless you have some other reason to do it like having a family member in that profession...
However, i appreciate your enthusiasm which is rare - especially in ENT .
First, be thorough in all your subjects in MBBS; you will find it harder to read for example Pathology or Physiology once you finish and join your postgraduate course...
Second, be thorough with your undergraduate ENT textbook
Third, be on the lookout... sometimes ENT associations and others may have a gold medal exam or competetion in your area which you may be eligible to participate..
Lastly keep up that spirit and maintian your enthusiasm and commitment

hi friends
ENT is the best branch as of now if you have an inclination towards surgical field.
It is a superspecialisation in itself...
With Head and neck surgery being very much part of it..it future is nothing but bright reasons
1) Very specific procedures and surgeries which no other surgeon will attempt (except traceostomy)
2) with endoscopes and microspes bein available at ease..lot many suregeris have a goot outcome and so more satisfaction
3) sure life saving procedures
4) after ENT have a chance to specialise in MS oncosurgery (Tata mumbai, Kochi kerala etc) , or plastic surgery (PGI)
5) surgically very satsfying and wellpaying too
6) you have money for self and family, also more importantly time for family and more time so u can think positively with the larger dream to make India progress!
am a final year ENT trainee in Pune

Thanks for the words dilpreet, i have just finished my MS and im looking out, trying to decide my future course... it's my pleasure if i have helped any colleague of mine.
I agree with captainprasun, however,
just as the rapidly changing field brings about new opportunities, it also brings about new challenges... it's difficult to find a core textbook for all the subjects in ENT because of the rapid changes - for example.
Money can be earned in any specialization... if you have the knack and those in ENT cannot afford to anticipate a relaxed life... unless you will be happy with a general sort of ENT practice.
new equipment and technology needs new techniques, and money to invest in the equipment...
However, if we can be successful despite these challenges, we will probably be thought of as pioneers in the field in the days to come...
wishful thinking na??icon_smile.gif)
