2006/2007 IMGO APPLICATION & OSCE

Hello,
To all who are planning to participate for this year 2006/2007 IMGO,
Well I’m trying for this year as well. So I thought we all should gather at one topic, rather then jumping here and there and asking for our queries, concerns, and suggestions etc etc etc.
First let me throw a little light on what I know and what I’m planning to do. I did apply last year 2005/2006 IMGO Application in OBGYN specialty and I did not have any idea that I should had applied in Family Medicine (FM) Stream. I had this perception that Family practitioner is just a General thing and no body what to go to him, but unfortunately not in Canada
, everything starts and ends at the door of family practitioner; you cant have spatiality referrals out pass family clinics. So far most and beyond family medicine is worth considering and worth taking field. So this year I’m planning to apply in this stream!!!.
IMGO for this year 2006 Application update is available at IMGO website which states:
“IMG-Ontario will be utilizing an on-line web based application for the 2006 application process. We anticipate that this process will be available mid June 2006. Please monitor this website for further information as it becomes available. Thank you.”
So we will see that application will be online in Mid June hopefully. I would urge all of you, who are planning to apply for this year to start preparing for OSCE
(CE1) exam sooner and I think by 1st June. IMG-Ontario offers two streams to IMGs 1) Family Medicine Stream and 2) Specialist Stream. Candidates may not apply to both streams. Candidates for the Specialist Stream must choose one specialty, i.e., they may not select more than one specialty.
All General Candidates who meet the basic eligibility requirements are invited to participate in a Clinical Examination 1 (CE1); which used to be called as OSCE
not any more. Usually its 12-16 cases of 10 minutes each, 8 minutes for OSCE
(hisorty, examination or counseling) and 2 minutes of PEPs (post encounter probes).
All Advanced Specialty Candidates who meet the basic eligibility requirements are invited to participate in a Specialty Written Examination (SWE – formerly WE2).
I hope I’m clear up to this point.
Now how to prepare for CE1, well I basically divided OSCE
cases as
1) History
2) Examination
3) Counseling cases
It’s better to prepare 30 to 45 cases for OSCE
, more cases more is the chance of getting good score.
Good score is consider above 550 – 600 or may be more. In my suggestion who hit 550 BINGO! ZAP~
Any ways, soon I think I’ll be posting the list of cases, so that its easier for us to get our brain cells working in right direction and when the times comes, better start completing our application.
Suggestions and contributions are welcomed!
Adios!

Hi Pearl,
How are you? your message gave me some new insights Thanks for that. I too planning to appear for OimG this year... I am a Gynaecologist I was thinking to applyy in Specialty stream After seeing this I am in Dilemma... How easy or difficult if I apply for Specialty. by the way how was the tutoring classes in Toronto which you have been written in other messages. Does a Pass in MCCQE carries any additional value as I am due to appear only in coming fall.

@ rsshruthi
My dear yes indeed once you apply for IMGO
your QE1 score and CE1 score both counts. This year 2006 the mean score of accepting candidate for QE1 was 545 and for CE1 600, so if you are willing to go for IMGO try to have a score around about 500 plus for QE1 and same and more for CE1
The preparation classes I mentioned in St Micheal is about EE/QE1 preparation and yes it wroth to atted as it disscussion and it better to have disscussion rather then one to one study!

@rodri
The best book to start with OSCE
preparation is
"Fundamental Clinical Situations: A Practical OSCE
Study Guide"
(Spiral-bound) 4th edition.
by Pieter J. Jugovic , Richard Bitar and Laura C McAdam
You can find it at University of Toronto Book store.

this is a wonderful post which you started, pearl. and thank you for your detailed input about the system and what needs to be done.
i got thru with my mccee in jan and took my mccqe1 in may '06. if i do clear this exam then i will be applying this year for both img and carms.
could you pls tell me more about the CE1 and if one does clear this exam then i dont know anything about what one needs to do after this. do we get to undergo a mandatory pre-residency training and before we go for this training are we already assured of a residency spot or do we have to compete again after the pre-residency training.
i would be very grateful if you can tell me about this.
i stay in mississauga and i have a suggestion. let us all help each other or lets get together and help each other in the application as well as the preparation for the CE1.

pearl, are there any formal classes or workshops that help us to prepare for the CE1 like kaplan does for USMLE
.
if there are no classes then lets get together and discuss and study for this exam as i believe that discussion will be the better way to read for this exam which is totally clinical.
and thanks for suggesting a book for CE1 as i was clueless about CE1 till now.

hi drsshruti, i am just waiting for my results of mccqe1 which are due sometime in last week of june. and then i plan to get together with someone who is also preparing for the OSCE
.
mccqe1 was a very tough exam and i actually only read all the USMLE
books and none of the canadian books that people recommend here. but i still dont have my result so we cannot say that this is the best approach. but people have done this in past and they have cleared the exam. so i am just hoping that i get thru with this exam.
where are you in Canada
? i was planning in forming a group so that we all can study together for the OSCE
and prepare better. i stay in mississauga.
