Hi!
interest will come slowly as u start doing practical stuff and attending emergency calls(if u have in ur institute).the new koneman is a must read book.for immunology read janis kuby for basics too good,u may not enter into the intracacies of genetics there.jagdishchander for mycology& viro ananthnarayan and jawetz shud suffice.

better interest will be generated if u read mandells tropical infectiuos diseases.I guess thats a lot of books : icon_smile.gif

ALL THE BEST!

Hi,
I thing the book Douglas, mandell and bennett is not an apt one for Microbiologists. It is more focussed on the clinical features and treatment which is not that important to a microbiologist when compared to the lab diagosis, which is not descussed in detail in that book. Moreover, even the little Microbiology related info that you cull from the book is too much that you will find it difficult to reproduce in the exams. Simply speaking, it is for gen medicine people than for us. IF one has a lot of time after finishing koneman, mackie, ananthu and chakraborty, we can go to it.

Hi,
I too have joined Micr this year. I think Kuby is more than enough for the immunology section. It is excellent with reagrd to the basics. We are not expected to know Clinical Immunology. So, the LANGE book by Daniel Stites and Tristam Parslow is not at all suitable. So do not do that mistake of opting for that book. Roitt is unsuited for it has so many diagrams that can never be reproduced in exams. It is too much into the biomolecular level, and will suit people with an interest in research. Of course, it cannot substitute Kuby. It can only be used as a top up.

Hi cru,
I entirely agree with you as regards ourselves becoming full fledged clinical microbiologists. I had attempetd to discourage the usage of Douglas, Mandell and Bennett for the simle reason that in some chapters, the lab diagnosis-biochemical n cultural charecteristics etc have been discuseed in just 200 words, whereas the clinical features of the disease caused by the organism seem to run into ten pages.. Of course, it is not going to hurt to learn them, but given the time constraints, i thought it would be wiser to finish Mackie mccartney, Koneman, Monica, Chakraborty, Ananthu, Parija etc and then move over to something extra.. These books would definitely enable us to become a good clinical microbiologist. You are right and I can't agree with you any better. I hoe you appreciate the thin line of difference between douglas and other books.. Both lead to different destinations.
