Quick Scroll FAQ: Can I take USMLE Step 1 after MBBS second year? 07.01.06 (2 years ago) #1

I'm a 1st yr MBBS student aspiring to take a PG from USA.Just applied for a passport so no chance of a brochure for USMLE .

Should one start preparing from the 1st yr itself??
I just read a post in some other thread regarding giving step 1 at the end of the 2nd yr............

Plz enlighten me on this

Cheers icon_smile.gif

no not at all........... man this is your time to build concepts of medicine.. on which building blocks of your career will be placed...... read well , and focus on the concepts of basic and para clinical sciences.....since MLE unlike AIPGE is an conceptual exam...they want to know that how much u understand a sub.... but keep reading material from USMLE books also since that is concise and will tell you what is asked...... now after this best time to write part one is at begining of final prof... you'll have entire internship for part 2 and immediately after that CS......... icon_idea.gif

Quick Scroll Plan ahead for MLE! 07.23.06 (2 years ago) #6

Hello everyone,

This is for first years like me aspiring for MLE[infact my term hasn't even begun yet].It's better to make a choice now than to be caught in a dilemna later.
I'm been through almost all the topics of the MLE forum and also AshB's thread about making the right choice...........

I know MLE requires a lot of slogging, patience and first year is not the right the time to think of studying for it.It would be like catching a fast train for no reason at all.But there is no harm in planning and speculate on what we will do five years from now and chalk out the right career path for us.........

I know some have already commented on this but it is scattered and hard to find.

Here's my plan:

1. Step 1 in third year.
2. Step 2 CK during internship.
3. Step 2 CS and Step 3[for H1B visa] post internship

Advice from seniors is well come.I know u all must be busy with ur own preparation but ur advice for novices like me is invaluable........

All first years are welcome to post there queries.........

Cheers,

well if you are highly inclined towards MLE then i feel ( with some hiccups) that plan of "super7" is OK....... but still after giving USMLE step 1 i realised that their basic sciences ques are also clinically oriented . icon_idea.gif .. so many a times we use clinical knowledge to solve basic science ques.. icon_idea.gif ...... so this handicap will always be there if you give mle step 1 in 3rd year of mbbs icon_confused.gif .... other thing is thatone year of internship is long enough to give all 3 steps
....
rest is personal choice.. icon_exclaim.gif
its been said that you are your own best judge icon_biggrin.gif

@ super7
well theoritically your plan sounds good but unfortunately if you are an Indian student its not recommended to do so. Its all in the way we lean medicine here as its not the PBL (problem based learning) unlike others.

I find step1 very comfortable after completing my clinical rotatins and internship coz of the basics of diagnosis. Even in step 1 you are given cases based on which you have to answer applying your 'BASIC" science knowledge. but it s way more easy and chances of commiting mistakes are very less if you are done with your orthopaedics , medicine and surgery.
So there is no point is doing things hastily. Rather one can write both atep1 and ck during internship with 6 months gap which would raise your chances of scoring good.

Remember a poor score is stamped for 7 years and there is no point in regreting and compensating it later by scoring good in ck...
All the best!
