Quick Scroll Movie-Review: Ankahee 07.31.06 (1 year ago) #1

After a long time someone in bollywood took the courage to recreate the passion in relationship movies that ended in 70s and 80s with movies like Aandhi and Bemisaal.

Usually I hate tearjerkers, simply because I do not want to get the unconfortable feeling of relating myself with the characters. Still, after getting frustrated by watching five ghost movies in a row on this lazy weekend, I decided to watch this supposedly "flop" movie by Vikram Bhatt. Like always, Vikram Bhatt has done a fantastic job. I always liked his work, but this movie made me admire him. Throughout I was wondering, to potray such a depth in characters one needs to live them in real life. I don't know how he manages to get under the skin of the characters to potray their real self, film the relationship dilemmas wherein no one is wrong, still everything goes wrong. Hats off to Mr Vikram Bhatt! You have done a superb job.

The main character in this movie, which is rightly named as "Ankahee" (english: unsaid), is a happily married surgeon (Aftab) who, along with him wife (Amisha Patel) and daughter (Hrishita Bhatt), has everything. He is in the hospital when Kavya Krishna (Esha Deol), the reigning Miss World, walks in with a slit wrist, and changes everything in his life. From there the movies evolves into an emotionally charged drama which has been deftly potrayed in a subdued way. It makes you think, and thats what I liked. The undercurrent of the storyline is much more engrossing than the main screenplay. Surprisingly the actors have done perfect justice to the characters, one thing we rarely see in Bollywood.

From a psychiatrist's point of view, I admired the movie for potraying an emotionally unstable borderline personality disorder (Isha Deol) in a perfect sense. It shows how such a person derives her existence from the external world, how she feeds on it to ultimately destroy it. The dangerousness of having liasions with such a person, who is hopelessly destined to repeat the tragedies in her life, and the resulting mess has been highlighted in such a manner that I wonder whether there was a real psychiatrist on board for the movie production.

The movie also had some entertaining moments between the surgeon and his psychiatrist friend as well wherein they compare the pros and cons of their respective professions in a lighter vein (like the option of switching off a talkative patient with Anaesthesia for the surgeon).

Only one flaw stood out in otherwise brilliantly made movie, that is Isha Deol's dialogue "Jab mein tumhare saath hoti hu to I feel more confidential..." Couldn't believe that such a gross error can be okayed and remain in the final print.

I wonder if anyone else who has seen the movie would have anything to add about the feelings this movie evoked in them...

Thats a good point you raised Supriya,

I assume you are talking about Janakpuri district center in Delhi, which has now got the dubious reputation of a suicide point. In some ways you are right, but there is another aspect to this emerging trend. Practicing Psychiatry in a developed country gave me some exposure to the so called social side effects a materialistic and inconsiderate society can bring. Here we, as mental health professionals, struggle to give the same security and safety-net what "extended families" in Indian society has been providing for ages. Looking at the existing scheme of things here, I could not help but wonder that no amount of resources, money or government input can replace the value of family network. Its only when such networks fail, we have more of tragedies like you mentioned.

Coming back to the movie, I found it interesting and thought provoking as it gave me a perspective of an increasingly common type of personality disorder in western society (emotionally unstable borderline personality disorder), in context of Indian society. I would also say that it is propagating negative vibes, but at the same time this promising genre of movies is providing us with a mirror to look at the world we are living in now. Such refelctions do have an important role and I should salute the courage of the producers and directors to risk their money on such a project (a rarity in bollywood). They did try their best to commercialise the product to let it be mainstream, but unfortunately the movie bombed on box office. I sincerely hope that it would not discourage other film makers in putting similar issues on screen in our beloved bollywood.

I talked to some of my friends, who are still in India, about the reasons why this movie flopped. Most of them could not comprehend the character of Isha Deol and found it unconvincing. I assume as such people are still a miniscule proportion in Indian society, people are not very familiar with it or find difficult to relate to such characters. It would have been the case with me as well if I was still in India. But having come across many such cases here, I could testify the character to be a textbook case of an important personality disorder which is bound to emerge as an epidemic in indian society too.

P.S. BTW a little bird told me that the movie was loosely based on the life of our very own miss universe. Is it true?
