Quick Scroll Inviting all planning to immigrate to Canada to discuss,.... 08.03.06 (2 years ago) #1

Imigration to Canada is something that seems to be in the minds of at least a few ppl in here. Plans do differ.......some r thinking of MLE n US residency but plan to get a Canadian PR to be safe......some r thinking of a careeer in Canada .....some r doin this coz htey have family there.
And seems there is too much info to sift through.
I for sure know that Canada is changing...........it's waking up to the reality of IMGs and making an effort to be IMG frendly. But that might well be the rosy picture...........a case of 'expectaion bias' on my part.........
So I invite all those who have info regardin Canadian immiration n the prospects of finding a residency there to contribute.......so that we all can take informed decisions n not end up with a PROTEST MARCH in Toronto a few years from now.
Take Care.

Let me start of with some facts I know.
Doctors find it easy to immigrate to Canada . There is no bias against them in this regard.

Canadain population is growing....... mostly by immigtations......n is now a little more than 3.3 Crores.

Till recently Canada was pretty uptight about taking in IMGs into its system. Even Candain nationals who studies abroad found it difficult to practice in Canada .

Canadian Residency is open only to Canadian citizens, landed immigrants or US School Graduates who r US or Canadian citizens.(Means in one way less competition compared to Oz n US)

Till last year the IMGs had to go thru IMGO (for Ontario Territory) of its equivalent in the other territories to get into Residency or Apply to the Second Iteration of CaRMS for the unfilled postions.

Till this year IMGs were allowed to participate only in the Second Iteration of CaRMS..but from this year CaRMS is open to IMGs in the First Iteraion too......some territories allow IMGs to compete in open but some have the equivalent of Quotas.

Most Territories have a 5 Year Return of Service Clause....meaning u have to work in an underserved area for 5 yrs in return for the Residency.

The IMGs getting into Residency is around 12% of those applying. But this may change this year in view of CaRMS change. The number of IMGs applying for Residency in the Second Iteration increased from near 300 in the year 2000 to 934 last year. The actual number of Residencies won by IMGs increaes from 60 to 111 in 5 years.

But of these 70 were in Family Medicine. Those getting residency thru IMGO n similar proagrams too r overwhelmingly in Family Medicne with very few Clincial Residecies.

Another curious fact is that last year 20 Internal Med n 10 Family Med n a even 1 Gen Surgery postions were left unfilled even at the end of Second Iteration!!!! (Maybe the brighter ones among us can use this to their advantage wen they apply for the match)

The Pay n Perks for Residnets r comaprable to US in numerical value.........donno how better or worse it is wen u take in Cost of Living Factor but I guess it is better.

Though Ontarion, Alberta n British Columbia r most preffered by most immigrants.........the Atlantic Territories..ie, New Foudland & Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Burswick actaully have falling populations and r actively wooing Immigrants.

Thats it from me for now. I hope some1 puts things in perspective over here. I have been told that many Docs land up there n end up as working in non medical fields but those who r bent upon being Docs do eventually become docs.........though in Family Medicine Practice.

Take Care

U can find all the required info in the Medical Colllege of Canada webiste Sufy. But I coulnd't find the English requirement stated.
I think it is a TOEFL and Test of Spoken English that is required.

Hey!
anyone in India out here who has applied for Immigration to Canada and now feels he/she has sunk a lot of money in a cul-de-sac out of which u wont emerge as a working doc?
So what can we do? Just let go of the money and forget Canada and try for AIPGE or sink some more money into USMLE ?

Hi Sufy, you'll find all theinfo about the MCC exams on mcc.ca....the TOEFL and IELTS stuff is not a requirement for the MCC exams but is needed to get into the residency programs....you'll find info on English requirements on the IMGO site.

Hope that helps!
