Quick Scroll IELTS FOR EU DOCTORS!!! 08.19.06 (2 years ago) #1

MESSAGE TAKEN FROM indi_go THE GROUP BY BAPIO,IT WAS A POST BY THE VP OF THE GROUP,DR PRABHU
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At Last there is some level playing field.

From October 2006 all EU doctors who have not undertaken their medical
degree in English will be required to pass IELTS !

As it stands now this applies only for F1 and F2 posts. But I am sure
this will apply to all training posts as well and also prior to
registration with the GMC for their CCT or prior to their appointment
in the NHS.

I have been asking for this for the last two years and at least this
should now improve patient safety and quality of care in the NHS. This
is partly good news for IMGs but not for F1 and F2 posts as most IMGs
are not eligible to apply for these posts but once it is introduced
for ST posts, I am surer IMGs will have less completion from EU doctors!

Regards

Dr Prabhu

Thanks for informing us all Nikhil...

I believe it was very much needed...

It might slow down a possible flood of EU docs and act as a hurdle, but not for long... I guess.

Look, for those who do not know, doctors from EEA have always been allowed to come to UK. What is this nonsense about "flood of EEA doctors"? Where do you they will come from? Do you think they have just found out they do not need a work permit to come to UK? They have never did. They have always came in a small but fairly constant number, took posts and went up the ladder in their career. Why is everyone so afraid of EEA doctors? They are only 4% of the doctors in training in UK, whereas IMGs are almost 50%.

And honestly, do you think IELTS will ever make a difference? C'mon, it's just band 7, it's not so difficult to pass.

The simple reason that there are few EU doctors because of intense competetion in the past. Non English speaking EU docs never stood a chance to get a job here before.
With the introduction of the new immigration rules... EU doctors gained preference over other overseas doctors.

Answers to your Q's tzytzy
Nonsense about flood of EU doctors - I mentioned a theoretically 'possible' flood of EU docs.
Where will they come from - Poland, Cezch republic, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania etc
It's not about EU doc's not requiring work permits.... It's about non EU docs requiring work permits!
No one is afraid of EU docs... it's just projecting and predicting the future of overseas doc's.
Will IELTS make a difference - IELTS will be difficult for those that have never studied English.

very rude language by tzytzy. Good job Munish.
whatever you have mentioned is ground reality.

And what the honorary member is trying to say is just a baseless emotional argument.

International doctors make 30 % of NHS (and probably these are the figures when there wasn't a separate category of EEA doctors).

what I wanted to say is that not the EEA doctors are the main competitors, they are just dust in the wind. it's the almost 7000 UK doctors graduating each year now, and competing for around 8500 new posts every year.

you should not try to see EEA doctors as a scapegoat to blame in this situation. if you look at the 15000 people who took the PLAB test in 2005 compared to the less than 500 who came from EEA you will realise where the issue really comes from.

and I really do not see anything rude in my language. I also took the PLAB and I am trying to have a clear view of the situation.

and by the way, I consider a good thing the IELTS for EEA

Agreed. We just have to wait for a clear picture to emerge. We'll reach no where by continuing this discussion. So, enjoy.
