Hi all
this goes to all those doing MD in pharma..especially to the freshers..
Express how u feel bout doing MD pharma..very happy, happy, not so happy, very unhappy n dissatisfied.. n WHY?
As for me,I thought it wud b a cool branch with no night duties and absolutely free of tension..so I opted 4 it,although DGO/DCH was available at my rank..
but now,as I look back,I often doubt if I took a right decision..I mean, pharma has got good prospects for sure, but the dilemma lies in the fact that it is after all not a clinical subject..& after wasting 5 and a half yr to become a doctor, there r times when u feel u cant just spend rest of ur life teaching MBBS students or conducting clinical trials or doing d medico marketing...Infact at times I feel like starting to prepare for exams all over again..but that is too late for aipg07 or state pg..
WAITING TO KNOW HOW U FEEL BOUT PHARMA,SPECIALLY FROM THOSE IN 1st YEAR...FRNDS,PLEASE SHARE UR THOUGHTS...

Hi,
I'm in my second year. I cant put a mark on a scale with the spectrum you have given. But I can say it is 'Just satisfactory'
It is true that it always pinches when you see a clinician in your peripheral postings or while managing clinical trials. It is still more difficult when you have left that when there was an option. For me I left MD Anaesthasia and joined Pharm. That was a huge decision which had significant consequences. The way things are going, I can say, that decision worked.
But, sorry to tell you, you will continue to have regrets unless you make it big in Pharm.
I had lots of recurring thoughts similar to you in initial part of first year. That time i was free and absolutely no work. Now i have several projects with me and I hardly have time to think about anything else than my academics & career.. Its like 'Idle mind is Devil's workshop'.
Also, other side of the pasture is always green. My friends in Clinics have lots of problems & concerns about their settling in the competition in private practice. Atleast you know that, you will get a job soon after completion. That is not so with clinics. There is struggle throughout your life.
Opting for Pharm may turn out to be the best decision in your life. Get involved in the course. Love the subject. Get involved in different projects. Clinical trials and asociated areas of Biostats, Clinical research, Medical ethics and Medical writing. Then you will find hardly anytime to introspect on your previous life.
Your choice must go along with the trend. Clinical Research is the in thing and be there. It is better than any DCH/DGO which r conventional and have 'n' number of people already established.. When there was a choice between MBBS & Engineering you made a mistake and try to correct it by going with the trend.. Leave the conventional medicine.
These are my opinions, may not be applicable for you..
Good Luck,
Placebo

Hi Plcebo!!
first of all, thanx alot 4 ur reply..I was hardly expecting reply frm any1..n was feeling like it was really stupid of me 2 express my conflicts here in this forum..
seems like I share exactly the same thoughts as urs...truly u said'idle mind is devil's workshop'..all my colleauges r prep 4 AI07..n d dept has kind of decided dat they wud only give us thesis topics once d AI is over..although i like pharma quite alot, having no work in hand is simply killing me n all my interest dat i had in pharma..
u may say why i dont do pharma sincerely...well d simplest n biggest coz is peer pressure,u no!!
wen u c evry1 around u trying to make it big in clinical subjects in d coming AI exam,IT IS HARD TO DECIDE NOT 2 TAKE D EXAM URSELF N B SATISFIED WID PHARMA,WITHOUT TRYING UR LUCK ONCE MORE..
There is more...as part of our dept activity,we need to do d ADR monitoring thing,n r sent to special OPDs like skin,Psychiatry
etc..d way a DDVL Pgt or even an RMO wud treat u out there makes u regret ur decision of chosing pharma a thousand times..dats my personal experience!!we r so extremely unwanted there...I ve such bitter experiences..i wud like to share...but no,I dont wanna recall those...
It really feels good to know dat atleast someone has gone thru d same phases in which am currently in..
Thanks once more..
hope u keep writing in here
ANYONE ELSE WANNA SHARE THEIR THOUGHTS ?????

Hi
I havent joined pharmac as yet but i am seriously considering it.I havent given my entrance as yet.Im sure I can get a clinical seat (eventually!).
But I am not so interested in d clinical side.At times I curse myself for opting for MBBS.
I must admit that the same question is eating my head too....that will I regret leaving a clinical field.
And hearing your views on this topic was quite helpful.
I guess every thing has its pros and cons.and the grass always seems greener on the other side.

Dear drjerry,
I was in ur position 1yr back..since with my rank I didnt get degree in any clinical subject,it was easy for me to opt for MD pharma...d decision becomes obviously more difficult wen u leave a clinical degree for Md pharma..
I think if u get MD pharma in a decent institute,n if u really regret ur decision of joining MBBS,its worth taking d risk...but before u join, make sure that d institute is a good one,coz without the touch of clinics,it somehow depends on d institution to get u involved in d subject n make u love or hate pharma..
I think d dilemma is coz we didnt realise wat it takes to become a doctor while joining MBBS...as for me,I realised my mistake only after doing internship..n..knew that those night duties were not really my cup of tea..but it was too late,n after wasting 5yrs to get an MBBS it kind of becomes difficult to do away totally with the clinics...I can totally understand ur dilemma,as I share d same...
But,1st concentrate in ur studies n do ur best in d exam...u'll get sufficient time to chose ur subject afterwards...n no matter wat people say, always follow ur heart, coz if u cant love wat u do u wont be able to do it for long.all d best.

Hi tinni_79
In my case i want to leave the clinical side not just because of night duties and stuff but simply because i feel more comfortable wid pharmac.I dont feel at ease in a clinical setting.
I entirely agree with you that the institution can make all the difference. The only reason I even thought of pharmac was because of the interest my pharmac teachers generated in me in undergrad.
Wich r the top colleges fr pharmac in India?
and is it worth trying fr pharmac abroad?
Thanx
drjerry.

seems like u'll b happy doing pharma...People keep saying that once u get ur MD n know ur job well college no more matters;but I think college really matters to keep u involved wih d subject 4 3long yrs...Besides institutes like AIIMS
,PGI,BHU
,JIPMER
colleges from Mumbai(splyKEM n Grants),Delhi,CMC Vellore
,SMC Chennai r also good...
I dont know much bout prospects abroad...GRE
is a good option after ur MD...take a look at other posts in pharma forum for options abroad.
