yaar baat patency ki nahi dryness ki ho rahi hai. surfactant decreases surface tention and helps the alveoli to prevent collapse. dryness or wetness has more to do with shift of fluid across the capillary endothelium. answer is hydrostatic pressure. in ccf lungs become "wet" because of increased hydrostatic pressure and not due to decrease surfactant synthesis. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! icon_eek.gif

Shivesh, I agree ha ans given is hydrostatic pressure. But I have
a small doubt here.Hydrostatic pressure will enhance the lung bcoming more wet.Shouldnt it be osmotic pressure which will prevent leakage of fluid out of the capillaries? ie the ans should b osmotic pressure?? Wot do u say?

hydrostatic pressure as well as oncotic pressure keep the lung dry. BUT the question asked is "about lung" specifically. oncotic pressure mechanism is applicapble through out the body, but there is something unique about pulmonary circuit. hydrostatic pressure is much more immportant here. hydrostatic pressure is kept strictly under check so that the lung is dry. pulmonary circulation is low pressure higly distensible circuit. left atrial pressure > 25 hotey hi lungs become wet. you might have seen pts of nephrotic and liver failure with quiet low oncotic pressures but they dont have such a prominent lung crepts as in mitral stenosis! even more immportant will be capillary permeability but again like oncotic pressure, doesnt play special role in lung only.

i invite more solid reasoning here.

IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE BALANCE BETWEEN THE FORCES-HYDROSTATIC AND OSMOTIC PRESSUE AND THE STRUCTURE INVOLVED(ENDOTHELIUM AND SURFACTANT).HERE THE QUESTION IS WITH NORMAL ADULT LUNG-SO IS THERE OPTION ALL ?

Hydrostatic pressure is the answer when the option all is not given.
